Imagine a generic houseplant. Its needs are pretty simple; sunlight, water, and CO2. It doesn't have a brain (centralized nervous system) and therefore lacks some needs that we as people have. We know that plants have receptors that can perceive the information needed to sustain life. If a plant is able to fulfill all of its needs its existence is enjoyable, if not it will wither and die. This is the same for all lifeforms, if a dog's needs are fulfilled it will be happy, if not it will not...
