I quit my job. I walked away from everything I knew. I couldn't lose anyone else. Not again. Working for James Martin wasn't supposed to be complicated or lethal. Too bad someone wanted him dead, and I was the only thing standing in the way. When eccentric, playboy, CEO James Martin's life is threatened, he decides to hire Alexis Parker, an attractive, feisty, former federal agent, to be his new security consultant and personal bodyguard. As Alex attempts to navigate the minefield of potential suspects, she discovers an underlying conspiracy that has been brewing at Martin Technologies for almost half a decade. Anyone could be involved, making Martin's closest friends, acquaintances, and employees possible suspects. What starts out as a single death threat quickly morphs into a plot to overtake his entire company. Once the pieces fall into place, things explode, both literally and figuratively. This outwardly simple case is something neither Alex nor Martin ever imagined. It will take all of Alex's training and instincts to track down the criminal mastermind and stop the assassination plot before it's too late, and even that may not be enough. With over 100,000 copies already downloaded, take the plunge and follow the flawed protagonist on her journey to redemption.

I purchased this on a whim because the description intrigued me, and the story absolutely blew me away. The plot is well formulated and kept me on the edge of my seat from the third chapter until the end of the book. I find a lot of mystery and thrillers have too much downtime (the Kathy Reichs series comes to mind), but here the plot kept moving forward. I must warn you, the first two chapters are a little slow as the three main characters are interested and the nature of Martin's threats are discussed, but after that there are shoot-outs, break-ins, explosions, a tactical assault, and obviously a lot of investigation and theorizing. The two main characters, Alexis and Martin have a palatable chemistry, but it's mostly just a tease that provides a lot of witty banter and levity to break-up the serious nature and descriptive action scenes. I read all genres of fiction, but Thriller/Suspense is my all-time favorite, followed closely by Mystery. G.K. Parks is an author I've never heard of before, but the writing is concise and illustrative enough for me to easily picture the scenes and the characters without getting bogged down with unimportant details. The crisp writing is on par with best-sellers and worth checking out if you want to read an action-packed, thriller, with fun and quirky characters. Alex Parker could easily be the next female action hero or heroine (I guess that would be more accurate). Needless to say, I can't wait for the second novel to be released.

Easy to read and story kept you interested. A few typos and sort of bugged me with the use of all ready instead of already.
