Loving Grief is a faintly shocking title. We know the words that" time heals the wounds", and yet the future is so far away in death. This story unwraps layers of love and loss. The author allows himself to be seen as he grapples with the certainty of death and the painful passage. I was touched and gratified to glimpse the quality of cherishing that is possible of one for another. He offers wise words for friends who want to know what to do or say when faced with another's grief. Each chapter has a brief poem that clarifies and moves you to the next theme. The final chapter has one look at time and grief as right now, right here with expanding love like the layers of a tree. Get this treasure about living.

This tender and beautifully-written exploration of grief will not only move you, but also provoke a deeper understanding about love and loss. My grief is how I love my lost beloved -- this is a central message of this rich book. A manual on how to accept the unacceptable, to face the unfaceable, this is must reading for anyone who has lost a beloved partner, parent, child, or friend. And, of course, a loving gift for a grieving friend or relative, as well.

I love this book. It is part poetry, part essay, part memoir, and wholly loving. Keep a box of tissues handy. I sent a copy to my friend Lee when she lost her beloved husband, and she found it deeply moving and comforting. She immediately bought 10 copies to give as gifts to others who were grieving for loved ones they had lost. I was so happy to have been able to do something to ease my friend's pain at a hard time in her life.
