First a small disclaimer. I live in the same small town as the author Manning, but I do not know him nor have I ever met him. I saw a post on our local newspaper's facebook page about the book and decided to look it up out of curiosity. I am so happy that I did, because I found a .99 cent Nook book that is one of the best fantasy books I have read in a long time. I gobbled it up, but slowed down at the end because I did not want it to end. There will definitely be a sequel, and I will be waiting and checking often for the release date. Amazing story telling for a first time author, originality, strong likable characters, and villians easy to hate. I found a few editing errors, but nothing to take away from the story. I cannot find one negative thing to say about this book except it was too short and left me wanting more, but I guess that is a good thing for the writer. Give it a chance and see if you do not agree with me that this is a book worthy of high praise and tell all your friends to read it now. I am going to try and get a signed book because I think this young writer has a big future and I can say I was there in the beginning.

This was a great book. I gave this book 5 stars because I enjoyed it a ton...despite the lack of good editing. Commas are a weakness for Manning, it seems. ;) However, it is easy to please me. All I need is a story (preferably first person) from the POV of a powerful magical being, and the more powerful he is compared to everyone else, the more I like the story (I suppose that there is a point where the main character's power would solve all problems quickly and ruin the book, but I've never read any so far). The main character in the Line of Illeniel (Mordecai...I think I spelled it right :P) has a fair amount of power, but nothing is too easy. One point I especially enjoy in these Mageborn books is Mordecai's willingness to research. There are so many (I repeat, so many) books where the main character discovers he has magical powers. And then...does nothing much. This character only learns more about his/her power when using it in a tight situation or something. But Mordecai actually experiments and is willing to research. +1 There was some more depth to this book than the first one, in my opinion. It was able to get me slightly emotional, which is a big achievement since I don't usually get emotionally influenced by books (although I am susceptible to humor...).

Manning manages to create characters and a world so clearly that as you move through the book it is easy to imagine even the littlest of details. The magic, battles, stories within stories he creates are epic and although the idea of a young man coming of age who finds out he can do magic ..... is not new, Manning manages to give it a whole new twist and when you mix that with a truly great and unique writing style, Manning brings a much needed new breath into the world of Fantasy. I imagine we will be talking about this author with the likes of the best. Read the books, you'll see:)

The book was an exciting read. Definitley had a bit of everything in it. The characters were great, though i would have liked to get to know some a little better. The story was nothing short of exciting and it pulled me in immediately. There were some editorial mistakes, not the authors fault though. The novel was a bit shorter than i expected but hopefully the second book will be out soon to continue the story.

This book has it all, mystery, suspence, action and even a little romance. I couldn't put it down until I was finished. So easy to escape into it, the characters are so real. Can't wait for the sequel.

Fantastic value. Great plot line, characters are realistic and well thought out. This is arguably my favorite series, and I cannot wait for the next book to come out.

Although poorly edited, and with language that felt out-of-place (the main character even thought about how something wasn't "plain English"...this is a different world, with no mention of English people), I still liked this book enough to give 4 stars. Mainly because it satisfied some of the main things I like in fantasy books: the main character has powerful magic powers, and the POV says with him most of the time. Of course, having a powerful main character isn't my only criteria, and this book was fairly well-written considering that the author is self-published. All the POV switches were a bit disappointing, but at least the author focused on Mordecai's life. I hope the next novel comes out soon. :) If anyone knows some good books about people with powerful magical powers (and from their POV), just tell me. Though I've read most of the well-known ones. :P Edit: Ha, I need an editor too.

I liked this book more than the first and was pleased at the emotion it brought. I laughed and cried. It refreshing to pay 2.99 fir a book of 377 pages. They weren't chapter outlines or other wastes of space. BrynnS

I loved this book. Great plot, great friendships, a little racy but so far nothing graphic. I hope the author can keep it that way. I already bought the second one.

I have ever read a book that switches perspective smoothly and coherently quite like this. Inspired a fellow author to mimic the same. Amazing story. Great job!
