From award-winning author, Ilona Andrews, an original novella, set in the New York Times #1 bestselling Kate Daniels World and featuring fan-favorites, Derek, and Curran and Kate's very independent ward, Julie.

Scarred, solitary Derek Gaunt has separated from his Pack, and is truly a lone wolf. With no family he answers to no one; but is fiercely loyal to a chosen few. So, when several of those close to him are murdered, he'll stop at nothing to hunt their killer through the magic-drenched streets of Atlanta.

Never one to be left on the sidelines, equally determined--some might say stubborn--Julie Lennart-Olsen soon joins in his pursuit; and what began as revenge turns into a race to save the city. Their search pits them against powers they never imagined and magic so old, it predates history. It may cost Derek his life, but there are things for which even he would risk everything.

"The Wolf and Herald are not to be missed!"

"Ilona Andrews pens my favorite flavor of keeper novel: tough characters, marvelous voice, fast-paced with that sharp edge of humor that adds the final grace note."
--Patricia Briggs, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Fire Touched

"One of the brightest voices in urban fantasy. Ilona Andrews delivers only the best."
--Jeaniene Frost, New York Times bestselling author of Bound by Flames

About the Author

“Ilona Andrews” is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.)

An amazingly exciting, action packed novella written mainly from our favourite wolf shifter, Derrick's POV. The interaction between him and Julie is just captivating. As is the insight the storey provides into Derrick's views of himself and the world around him. Kate's talented adopted daughter, Julie, shows a maturity and growth of character that gives us hints of how she will develop in the future, while still leaving us nervous as to which road she will follow. This is the best of the off shoot novellas as yet. It not only adds depth to both the characters and to Kate Daniels World as a whole, but it also sets the stage for some exceptional storylines in the next books. An excellent read that should not be missed. I received this ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

The format of the Kate Daniels novels leaves mystery and questions about the secondary characters. This novella is glimpse into Julie & Derek, their lives, their loves, and how they spend their time while Kate is busy. I liked it, and want more. Enjoy the read!

3.5 Stars Derek is the one character I couldn’t wait to get his own story!  From the moment he was introduced, and Kate put him in his place, you just had to love him.  In Magic Stars, Derek and Julie are on a mission together to save the city once again.  Julie and Derek; a story line I want to see more of, especially when she is older.  I think the fact that she is 16 and off limits, is just building the anticipation for when she is of age.  A 4-year age gap isn’t much.  The story was fast paced with non-stop action and a good start to a new series....Sara

Magic Stars is a novella about Derek and Julie, from the Kate Daniels series. This story takes place after Kate and Curran leave the Pack. Derek, who had also severed his ties with the pack to join Kate and Curran, was hunting down the killers to a family of four when his path intersects with Julie, Kate's ward. Julie, a very head strong 16, takes a case that had come in to Kate's business, and since Kate had been out, decided to investigate on her own. Derek and Julie realize that they are investigating the same crime, and join together to solve it. Derek and Julie have an interesting relationship. He is 20 to her 16, and the author seems to be setting us up for a romance between the two of them when she gets a little older. He has always considered himself her guard, and cares more for her than he does almost anyone else. He regards she, Kate and Curran as his pack, even if he won't say it out loud. It is interesting to hear his thoughts about himself and those he cares about, which is worth the time, as we don't usually get insight into his character. Julie, who we've watched grow up, has always been mouthy and strong, but now she also packs a powerful punch, literally. She has been apprenticing with the local coven to enhance her magical abilities and has been taking private lessons from Kate's father, Roland, who is the uber evil that the will be fighting in a future novel. This fact comes out during this story and is a huge plot point for the series. Will Roland gain some kind of power or allegiance over Julie, that will give him an advantage over Kate? We'll have to wait to find out. I am a huge fan of he Kate Daniels series, and would recommend them to anyone who has not given them a try. If you'd like to see them in order, go to the author's website at If you are into the series, don't miss the chance to read this gem.

A must read for fans of the Magic series. I'm a long time fan so I bought it and read it quickly enough. Not sure I'd recommend it for someone new to the series. Definitely check out book one, Magic Bites. It is the start of a good solid paranormal series.

Twists and turns

The Kate Daniels world is intense and these two young adults are taking it by storm. There's never any visions about Julies future which is so odd. Only Kate's and her future son. Julie seems to be coming into her own between the necromancy and now a power word. I can't wait to see what happens next. I hope there's more Julie and Derek stories on the way.

They just don't write a bad story. This is another terrific journey into the Kate Daniels world. This features Derek and Julie, whom I'm sure we will hear from again. The only problem is it's too short. I knew that going in, but I still didn't want it to end. Don't miss it!
