Magic levies a steep price on anyone brave enough or stupid enough to dabble in it.

Wizards never forgave Ned for not being one of them. They didn't exactly come out and say his life was expendable, but they didn't have to. He figured it out fast enough when they conscripted him into their long-running war the second he was old enough to fight. Isolated, different, he puzzled out how his brand of magic worked on his own. When he's finally, finally sent on a solo mission, he vows to make the most of every single moment of freedom.

Fleeing the tide of doom wiping out humanity, Amanda and her family escape to a remote corner of California, where they eke out a hardscrabble existence. With her parents at each other's throats and her brother mysteriously gone, Amanda runs up against malevolent power beyond her wildest imaginings. Captured by the undead, she's about to join their ranks when Ned shows up.

Attraction ignites--hot, urgent, delicious--but celibacy may well be the price of Ned's magic, and he can't risk his power. Or can he? Even though he stands to lose everything, Ned doesn't hesitate after Tantalus--one of the insidiously beautiful dark gods--kidnaps Amanda. Defying a direct order from his wizard battle lord, he goes after the woman he loves. Even if she can't ever be his, he'll be damned if he'll leave her to the dark god's whims.

Once again, Ann Gimpel gives us an incredible novel with a style that is all her own! Set in an apocalyptic, dystopian future world, Marked by Fortune is filled with fantasy, magic, heroism and love. The characters are are well developed and endearing. The storyline is well done and fast-paced. My only regret is that there is not a sequel ;)

Received this book free for an honest review. Magick, Mages & Wizards... What more can you ask for? I loved this book! I loved the journey that it took me on. It's amazing what you can accomplish if we all worked together. Family is very important. You should nurture them and love them, always. This book has so much magick and mythology, that it will make your head explode.

I loved this book! The book is a standalone with a HEA. Though if the author choose to write additional books to make this into a series, there are plenty of storyline options to go with future books. And I would be one of the first who would be purchasing them if she did write more. There is a lot of violence and the sex is hot and steamy so definitely 18+. The book blurb adequately describes the storyline so I'm not going to repeat all of that info here. The author did a great job of explaining and describing this dystopian version of earth complete with wizards, mages, gods and goddesses, and all sorts of unimaginable creatures. This is a story of becoming who you are meant to be and the lengths you would go for love and family. The storyline will keep you guessing at what twists and turns will be revealed next. It definitely kept me riveted. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Holy wow! I love, love, love Ann's work... but this one blew me away. It's a full length stand alone novel, but honestly... I would be so stoked if there were more! Wizards, mages, gods and goddesses and a phenomenal story line that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Marked By Fortune delivers action, adventure, war, magic, and just enough romance thrown in. I highly recommend this for your next read!

I’ll say it again, Ann Gimpel certainly knows how to build worlds. In fact, I wouldn’t hesitate to say she is an expert at it. The dystopian/fantasy world that Marked by Fortune inhabits is once again detailed and perfect for the characters she has created. And, while Ned is clearly the main character of the story, the way in which Ms. Gimpel shared the story from multiple POVs was perfect. You end up with this theatrical, movie quality viewpoint of all the action taking place. While Marked by Fortune is a dystopian fantasy it is also a coming of age story and romance. While Ned is surrounded by wizards centuries-old he is a mere twenty something, a babe by comparison. To boot he is a mere human mage. If there is one thing wizards scorn and look down upon it is humans. After all they are an infestation on the face of the earth. They have brought ruination down upon the world by depleting its resources and warring amongst themselves. So when the wizards find themselves engaged in war once again with the infernals of the evil gods what better place to send him than the frontlines where he might die the sooner. Human civilization is in ruins along with its cities and cultures. After a particularly exhausting battle, Ned is sent into the wilderness to find another woman like himself, a human mage. Who he finds and rescues is Amanda, the daughter of the mage he seeks. He finds himself smitten with the young woman. Amanda, her brother, Jon and parents, Lori and Rolf have traveled into the Sierras to escape the atrocities of the cities. They eek out a living from the land. Living close by is a reclusive wizard named Karras. He has taught Lori to talk with the animals. A few years ago, Jon disappeared without a trace. Now Amanda has disappeared only to be rescued from the infernal undead by Ned. So begins Amanda’s family’s enlightenment in the ways of magic. So too begins Amanda’s journey to love with a young mage. While their love is new, somewhat innocent, it is far from chaste even if they do not consummate it for fear of the cost to Ned’s magehood. When Amanda is kidnapped during a brutal days long battle with infernals, Ned will see betrayal and imprisonment but nothing will deter this young mage from saving his love, not even traveling to another world of evil, bleakness, and despair. Nor will it stop his companions on their own quest to rescue Amanda. The road to success is brutal and costly. The battle is epic. Success though has its rewards. Marked by Fortune has its wizards, mages, gods and creatures of the unholy. It is full of action and adventure. The characters are well drawn and compelling. The storyline is epic. If there is one downside to the story it is in the fact that Ms. Gimpel has stated there is no planned series. I would recommend it to anyone who loves a good sword and sorcery fantasy. While the sexual content is limited I would still recommend this for a more mature YA or adult reader. Once again, Ms. Gimpel has created a real winner. *****Reviewed for Xtreme-Delusions*****

This is a story about Ned, a human mage, that has lived with wizards his entire life. They have never shown him any compassion, and look upon him as basically cannon fodder. Ned travels to the Sierras to relax and happens to catch a kidnapping of a human girl, Amanda, in progress. He stops the kidnapping, and along the way he falls in love with her. He finds out that her older brother was kidnapped several years before. He meets up with his mentor, Karras, while helping Amanda's family. Amanda gets kidnapped again, and Ned has to enlist the help of the wizard stronghold that he grew up in to rescue her. I won't give away the ending, but it does have a happy ending. I found this book hard to get started, which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. Once I got into the book, I couldn't put it down. Ann's description of the relationship as it develops between Ned & Amanda hooks you. Through their innocence, you can't help but fall in love with them both. The book is filled with Gods, Goddesses, and all kinds of "boogeymen". There is action & some violence, but all in all this is another must read of Ann's.

I was given a free copy of Marked By Fortune by Ann Gimpel in exchange for an honest review. This is another great read by Ann. Wizard’s put themselves above anything human or part wizard and human or anything else. Ned has been raised by Wizards, but barely tolerated by them. Ned is an Earth Mage. He is sent out to fight with the Wizards, hoping that he will be killed. Ned is sent to find a woman in the mountains and he winds up finding out what belonging to a family is really like. Ned has never felt that he belonged. Ned just wants to be accepted no matter what he is. Ann again weaves a wonderful story about how the humans are killing the earth with all the pollution. Again her description of the characters is so realistic that I can picture the demonic beings that spill from the bowels of earth. Earth’s Requiem is another winner written by Ann Gimpel. Be sure and grab your copy so you can look forward to reading it on a lazy afternoon.

Action packed, extremely complex personalities, and wonderful story line. Get ready for an exciting read, hold on tight you may find yourself in other worlds........ Earth has been decimated and a War is going on between the infernals and the Wizards, the Gods and Goddesses have abandoned earth, Mages have all but vanished too. Ballance has been destroyed. Ned,(human-wizard) sigh the underdog by every definition of the term, has built a strength that even those who dislike his very existence find they admire. Wizards are a stuck up lot. They fail to see the value in any other species. They constantly underestimate Ned, of which Ned uses to his favor time and time again... but will it be enough to save his love? Amanda,(Mage-Sidhe) well her life has not been all it could have been due to her parents (Rolf & Lori) not knowing where they came from and what they truly are Mages and Wizards. Being children of the lost they simply did not know leaving their own children Her and Jon easy prey for the infernals. Can Amanda live long enough to tell Ned she loves him? Can she salvage what is left of her brother Jon's soul? Will any of them Live long enough to care?
