About the Author

Nichole Chase is a daydreamer. No, really, just ask any of the math teachers that had the misfortune of seeing her name appear on their class schedule. For years she has had story lines and characters begging for attention, but she resolutely pushed them aside to focus on more normal (read, boring) jobs. Well, no longer! She is currently heeding the voices in her head and frantically writing their stories. Nichole resides in South Georgia with her husband, energetic toddler, three dogs, and two cats. When not devouring novels by the dozens, you may find her writing, painting, crafting, or chasing her daughter around the house while making monster noises.

My Summary: Since her brother's death, seventeen year old Ree has had disturbing dreams and always feels like she is being watched. She doesn't understand what's happening. All she wants, is to get through high school. Then there is her brother's best friend Paden. He's promised to watch over Ree, but she wants more than friendship. She's loved him since she was a child. One night when they head out to a concert, Ree and Paden feel like they are being watched. Turns out, that the "people" watching her want to destroy Ree before she can save the world. She had no idea that she was the answer to protecting the world from darkness. Ree has guardians, who turn out to be her friends. Her guardians are the descendants of Gods. As she reveals the truth about her destiny, not only does she find her heart torn between two guys, but more surprises will be revealed. My Take: I feel like it's been a while since I've read a vampire story. Honestly, I wasn't sure what to expect. What I liked was that the vampires were different than other vamp stories. I also like that there is mythology tied into the story. There's also a bit of magic too. A well rounded mix, that brings the story together nicely in the end. When I first met Ree, I felt a bit sad for her. Not only is she a bit of a loner at school, but her family is so distraught over her brother's death, that they kind forget about her. However, once she starts to learn the truth about who she is, she really steps up to the plate. There is nothing worse to me than a whiny heroine and thank goodness Ree handles all these changes with a kick butt attitude. On to my favorite part of the story....PADEN. I'm the type of gal that focuses a lot on the boys in the book. Are you shocked? If I don't feel a connection to the lead guy right away, the story drags a bit for me. Luckily for me, I fell for Paden pretty much immediately. I mean, I got a little irritated with him from time to time with the whole, "I can't date you because, you are my friend's sister." deal, but he redeemed himself. I love that Paden is her main protector. He's so fiercely devoted to keeping Ree safe that it made me swoon more than once. Now, there is another fellow, Roland, that enters the scene to make things a bit challenging for Paden. In fact, I think he pushed Paden into confessing his feelings for Ree, because he was jealous of Roland. I can see the benefit to having Roland in the story and there is definitely a strong connecting story between Roland and Ree, but I'm just not loving him. Paden is my choice, hands down. As for the story, I admit, the flow was smooth, but I kept waiting for "the" moment that I would be wowed. I felt the connection to the characters, but I needed that special something to make me love the story. The first moment came when you begin to understand the possible connection between Ree and Roland. It should definitely make for an interesting twist as the story continues. The second moment for me came at the end. What a great ending! I admit that I had some suspicion about what happened, but once it happened, I wanted to keep reading to see what would happen next. My final thoughts are: the writing was great, I connected to the characters, and I look forward to the next book in the trilogy, Mortal Defiance. I feel like this is a great read for the YA community. If you are looking for a good mix of paranormal characters with a twist, this is a great pick for you. I really look forward to reading Mortal Defiance. I can't wait to see what happens next!

I really enjoyed this book. It has a different take on vampires. It was well written, easy to follow, and has romance.

I was really excited to get into Ree's world after reading the summary of Mortal Obligation. And my excitement was generously rewarded as I was swept up in this great story. What I liked: 1) The Guardians. How they are...created, or tapped as Guardians is pretty cool. 2) Roland. Okay, I'm majorly crushing on this guy. He seems to be super sweet, but also kinda dangerous at the same time. 3) And then of course there's Paden. Strong, sorta silent type whose nursing an unrequited crush? Let's say it together now, LOVE TRIANGLE! There were some incredibly sweet scenes with Paden that just made me want to sigh. 4) The battle scene. This was one of the best written battle scenes I've read in a while. Seriously, I was holding my breath at one point. 5) I didn't expect the killer twist at the end. Going back and thinking about it, I was like, oh, man. I should have seen that coming! But I didn't. :) What I didn't like: 1) It's a little slow on the uptick. It took me a bit to get into the story. Of course once I did get into it, I didn't emerge until I was finished. Overall thoughts: This is a great start to The Dark Betrayal Trilogy. It opens up a new world full of interesting characters, a new twist on paranormal concepts, and a different backdrop. I can't wait to see where the story goes next for Ree and her friends.

What to say..what to about AMAZING books! As soon as I started reading the characters drew me in! It was so great to again find such a different spin on YA paranormal. I feel in love with Nichole's styling of writing, I found it great and the characters interaction/feelings going on were realistic making it easy to connect with them well reading! I felt it was paranormal with a twist, action packed and has a sweet romance! Im still stuck on who I like more Paden or Roland eek! I was running and buying book two before I even finished book one! I beg you go see what I am talking about and fall in love with the series like I did! You wont be disappointed!

Mortal Obligation is an strange and unique twist of paranormal and scifi. With a detailed mix of mythology and supernatural being; this story transforms into an Xmen like group that is dedicated to the fight against evil. Admittedly, I struggle with the background of this story. The mixture was very unique and creative, but I felt it was difficult in envision. Even with this obstacle it was surprising easy to continue, and overcome the this obstacle to find an enticing and enjoyable read. The characters prove entertaining and interesting that add to a fulfilling experience. As a debuting novel for this series it is obvious that this was the first book, and the novel appears ready to take off from here. With the momentum that was previewed in concluding book one; I anticipate that will surpass my expectations.

Although I’m not a YA reader, I absolutely fell in love with the characters of this book and wished they would have been adults in adult situations. None the less the story was fantastic and I can’t wait to read book 2 and get my Paden fix! Great book Ms. Chase!

Nah, apart from all its flaws, this book just wasn't for me. I did like how the characters didn't start off with their powers and had to gain them, but thats pretty much the only positive thing I have to say about this book. Everything I thought was important wasn't discussed or even considered by the main chatacter, like the fact that her friends are immortal and will have to watch her die (as shes the only human among them and will age normally), but she in turn will have to watch herself age and will be forced to either move on with her life and give up the friends she fought with, or struggle to deal with their changing realationship and the fact that they will live on forever without her, eventually forgotten. You would think that having such disturbing things looming in your future would be something that would upset the main character more than her dating life, but apparently not. Issues like this were the main reason I gave this book one star. After some thought though I decided to rate this book at two stars, the extra one giving because I was feeling generous and to compinsate for me not liking this particular type of fantasy.

She doesnt ACT like an adult so why does she Expect him to Treat her like one? Stubborn my ass. She's selfish. There is a big-time difference between being stubborn and being selfish.

Ree fears she is being followed by something lurking in the shadows. She is right. While out with friends, Ree is attacked. And the world she thought she knew changes in an instant. No longer a typical teenager, she is now the only hope for mankind against a group of deadly vampires called the Dark Ones. And yeah, these guys don't sparkle. Each of her friends are given special powers and become Guardians in order to protect Ree in the battle against the Dark Ones. With only a week left before school, the group must train to use their talents and prepare themselves. First and foremost this author is one of the sweetest authors I have come across. Just precious! Second, her book totally rocks! The plot is well developed as well as the kickin¿ tail characters. Out of all the characters in the book, I liked Ree the most. Labeled an art geek in school, she really grew into her new role throughout the week the book takes place. The character I wanted to slap upside the head the most? That would be Paden. Why must he be a butthead in the love department? But yeah I still love him too. I am looking forward to the next book and praying there is as much action, suspense and romance as in this one. Mortal Obligation is definitely a must read book that you¿re going to love. *UPDATE* I did forget to mention there is one whopper of a twist in the book. I was so shocked!!

This is a brilliant book and for FREE too!!! Be warned though, that after you've read this, you'll probably have to go and put the other two on your wishlist as I have!! If you've ever watched an episode of Buffy and enjoyed it, then I think that you will love this book. The Dark Ones are very Buffy-esque which is not a bad thing. And there is a scooby gang of them, instead of just one pair. Ree is an artistically favoured girl with a small group of friends who has been classed as 'strange' for most of her life. One night changes her outlook on strange and also her friends too. This book deals with finding out, and dealing with, the legacy to which she and her friends were born. I loved how it wasn't just one set of Gods involved but also ones that are not so well known (Amaterasu, the Japanese Sun Goddess). Ree as a character is brilliant. She is the one that is the most vulnerable but paradoxically, the one with the most power. I loved how she was not prepared to sit back and let everyone fight for her. As for the other characters - the friends are brilliant and I loved how they all interacted with each other. They certainly do balance each other out. As for Roland and Paden, be still my beating heart. How is a girl supposed to choose between them? I have no idea but I'm looking forward to reading A LOT more about those two :D HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for all fans of Buffy and the fantasy/paranormal world. Merissa Archaeolibrarian - I Dig Good Books!

I've had this in my library for quite a while. Enjoyed the writing style and storyline. I'm a big romance book reader but one of the things I liked the most was the friendship aspect. I really liked their personalities especially Weylin. I have to say that Paden really got on my nerves in the beginning. Why these girls just allow these guys to jerk them around gets under my skin. Making them grovel a little never hurts. Just saying. I've read the entire series and it's consistently good. Would highly recommend.

This story is an interesting twist on vampires and children of the Gods. Not just Greek Gods, but Gods of many cultures and countries. It was a little hard to keep them all straight and some of them I had never heard of. Vampires are from another planet and waging a war on Earth and the children of the Gods must take up the battle and win so humanity can exist in peace. I really liked the story and the characters. Ree is the main characters and Paden is the boy she loves. He is destined to protect her and keep her safe during the war. He loves her too, but has a hard time justifying it I think. He was rather miffed at him a few times just like Ree was, but I am hoping he will finally get it together and let her know how he really feels. Roland was very intriguing and I am wondering if he and Ree will end up spending some time together while Paden figures out exactly what he wants. Great story and I highly recommend it
