About the Author

Meet Award Winning, Best-Selling Author Cherime MacFarlane I came to Alaska kicking and screaming in 1976 and I never want to leave. I swore I would not live above the Alaska Range because it was too cold there and wound up in the Copper River Basin where it got just as cold as Fairbanks. A friend and I farm dressed a bear that came too close to her livestock and got shot by her twelve year old son. The bear bacon I smoked was great. I used a fish wheel to get in salmon for winter and packed the fish out a mile up the ridge and a mile down to the road. Once I had to lift and hold something far past my strength and almost passed out while doing it. I’ve cut cords of firewood for sale, and I’m still the best hand wood splitter I know. For over thirty years I hauled water in five gallon pails and pumped water from thirty gallon garbage cans into the house at below zero temperatures. My second husband, a Scot from Glasgow, was the love of my life. When I write Scots dialect, I experienced hearing it from my in laws. When my husband got on the phone to Scotland after five seconds I could hardly understand a word. I was my second husband's chief mechanic's helper and roadie. My love and I erected the walls of a new room 16 feet in the air and if either of us slipped it would be a good long stay in the hospital or a short one in the morgue. My love and I were not apart over twenty-four hours for twenty-plus years. I wanted to be with him all the time. He was a man to run the river with and was my biggest fan. We rode all over on a Harley and I sailed a small sailboat. When the rigging sings in the wind it is amazing. The beauty of Alaska is a draw I cannot resist. I love the people and the history. Alaska has captured me even though I came here under duress. Life plays some interesting tricks on one. I lost one husband to alcohol and another to disease. The second one was the love of my life and my best friend. I am Cherime MacFarlane and I am an Alaskan.

Poppy hit a nerve with me from the beginning. I've been in situations where frustration was so intense all I wanted to do was scream at the top of my lungs while driving a car. In Poppy's case, she was not alone and the car crashed through a store's window. The book is from the perspective of a young woman (no longer "jail bait" age) who discovers the man who raised her was not her biological father. She experiences anger and humility--anger that she was never told, and humility because of the circumstances of how she and her mother came to live with the man she calls "Poppy." You experience her emotions, and discover the real truth behind the circumstances. This is a great book for teens, one they can relate to today with so many families no longer what was considered traditional a generation or two ago. It deals with their super-charged emotions, and also reassurances that they can get through it with the support of the ones who love them.
