Overview

2500 Years ago, a race of immortal Powerborn known as the Lyx dominated the world, enslaving all of the lesser races and pushing the world itself to the breaking point. At the height of the Lyxs power, Fate intervened and unleashed the most dangerous weapon in its arsenal: the force of nature known as the Harbinger.

Though its power is nearly limitless, the Harbinger is purely a weapon of last resort, and once it has been released it cannot be controlled--it can only be destroyed. Furthermore, there is only a single opportunity to stop it before it completes its destiny and destroys the world, and that opportunity is granted to only one being: the Champion.

In the Valley of Fire, the legendary battle in which the Lyx were consumed in the fires of the Harbinger, the Champion struck down his foe and saved the world from destruction, but not before it could set into motion a new cycle of destruction which will lead to the rise of the next Harbinger.

In the years since the fall of the Lyx, an empire built by Zarryiosiad, the Powerborn who successfully led humanity in a 400 year-long war against the Lyx, has splintered into warring countries. The island nation of Illymar, wealthiest of the countries and the one-time home of Zarryiosiad herself, has seen its fortunes decline and its position weaken to complacency and corruption within.

Ambitious and warlike Dakkadia wants to capitalize upon Illymars weakness to expand its territory and influence using their new weapons of war, but standing in their way are the Ferralin Empire, and the Mage Guard of Ithram, an army of Powerborn sworn to uphold peace on behalf of the Zarryiostrom, the church formed in the name of humanitys greatest heroine.

And watching from the shadows is an ancient race of immortals who quietly shape events, working toward a purpose all their own as a threat more terrifying than the Lyx lies in wait.

POWERBORN is the first book of The Zarryiostrom an ambitious new series written and illustrated by fantasy artist Nene Tina Thomas, and her husband Steven C. Plagman.

About the Author

Nene Tina Thomas and her husband, Steven C. Plagman have been involved in the sci-fi/fantasy industry since 1993, when Nene began her career as a professional fantasy artist. After completing a series of jobs for different game companies, she decided to strike out on her own and become a print artist instead. Since then her career has blossomed, and her artwork can be found on products worldwide, including figurines, t-shirts, stickers, and puzzles. In her spare time, she began work on a story called "The Key To War", which eventually became "The Zarryiostrom".

She met her husband Steven at Gen Con in Milwaukee, and after he served four years in the Air Force, the two began working on "The Zarryiostrom" full-time.

They live in Oklahoma City with their ten cats: Snowmane, Amber, Leilani, Blackfel, Nightshade, Greylordling, Domino, Gozer, Butterscotch, and Cassiramaithris.

Wow! What a fantastic beginning to a great new series. Powerborn is the first book in the Zarryiostrom series by Nene Thomas and Steven Plagman. I absolutely loved this book! The characters are endearing and well developed, and the scenes are vividly described and seem to leap off the page. The story flows well and keeps the readers attention throughout. Warning: Powerborn is such a good read that you may find yourself looking at the clock at 3 am and having to make yourself go to bed. My favorite character from Powerborn has to be Pirncess Deirdre of Dakkadia. Although her father the king is quite a warmonger, she is an adorable imp of a child who observes more than the adults around her realize. She also has the voice of an angel and a tenacity that is truly delightful. One of the things I truly love about this book (Well I love everything about it but..) is the group of 20 full color illustrations depicting characters in the book. There is something I find so much fun about reading about a character as they come into the story and being able to look at their actual portrait. It is just that much more of a boost to my already overactive imagination. Bravo Steve and Nene. I am waiting anxiously for the next installment of the Zarryostrom. (Crap yet another series I am now addicted to!)

I first fell in love with Nene's work after seeing the Astranaithes portrait and finding her website. I probably read the sample chapters for Powerborn a half dozen times before the book came out and was on pins and needles waiting for my copy. This had all the elements I love in the books I collect - likeable and unlikeable characters, humour, action, intrigue, magic and that you just can't put it down factor. Plus the fact there are untold future editions coming. I have ordered Usurper (called office to order and thought I was talking to an employee and was talking to Nene herself! I was floored and thrilled - she is so sweet!) and I can't wait for it to get here and see what happens next. Yes, some of the names are hard to pronounce but there is a guide in the back and I did find one typo and some puncuation issues (Steven and Nene, if you need a proofreader I volunteer!) but I am eagerly awaiting Usurper and the rest of the series. Keep it up, Steven and Nene! You have a winner here as far as I'm concerned! Kelly Mondor
