Gr 5-8 Nancy Drew is back, but this is a Nancy with a difference. Nancy's gotten tougher, more sophisticated, and far more up-to-date. She is now at home in a world of videocassettes and rock musicians. In Deadly Intent, Nancy hits the big time as she investigates the mysterious disappearance and apparent kidnapping of a major rock star. In Secrets Can Kill, Nancy sets out to investigate what appears to be a case of petty theft in a local high school, only to discover the trail leads to blackmail, espionage, and murder. All of the familiar characters from the old stories are here: Nancy's lawyer father, her friends Bess and George, and, of course, boyfriend Ned Nickerson. Still, in some respects, this 1980s version of Nancy Drew bears a greater resemblance to T. Ernesto Bethancourt's hip teenaged sleuth, Doris Fein (Holiday) than to her own old-fashioned counterpart.
