If this excerpt is any indication of how the entire book is written, I will never make it through the first chapter. Books written in such a way do nothing but irritate the reader, especially when that reader is also an author. I understand the book is written in the form of a memory, but even memories have pauses for breath. I am sorely disappointed I wasted my time reading the excerpt and typing this comment, especially since I know no one will bother to care what I have to say. I wanted to give the book a rating of 1/2 star: I gave it a 1/2 star for the beautiful descriptions of the New England town the family lives in, but I am being forced to give it an entire star. It is quite undeserving. Good day.

Really? It seems as if someone is attempting to low- ball a book that they have not read and are not going to buy. Get a life and let those of us who really enjoy reading Kincaid's previous works have a crack at this one.

The title intrigued me, the editorial reviews encouraged me, the customer reviews disheartened me, I needed to read for myself. All I can say is Wow! I am blown away! This is an amazing writier! What is wrong with you people? Have you never heard of stream of consciousness writing used by a couple of our greatest known 20th century writiers for example Virginia Woolf and William Faulkner? Like one of the editorial reviews stated few true literary reads are easy but are certianly worthwhile. Maybe all of you with your negative statements should have paid closer attention to the editorial reviews or maybe you just didnt understand what you were reading. It makes me sad when people dont understand EXCELLENT writing. Oh well, just want to let the author know some of us get it and appreciate it.To all of you who dont get it I feel sorry, you are truly missing out, I just wish people were more open minded. Anyway I have said my piece, HAPPY READING TO ALL and TO ALL A GOODNIGHT!

Well, what can I say - this is an exceptional book.

I've got to say, I sort of like this excerpt. I was surprised to read the negative comments. I do not presume to know anything about those who seemed to really hate Kincaid's writing, feeling it was boring, non-sensical, and a waste of their time. To each his own. As for me, I abhor multi-tasking, don't twitter or tweet or "do" facebook. I enjoy getting centered, immersing myself in good writing and going along for the ride. I'm going to buy and read this book. I'm looking forward to it.

This is some of the worst writing I've seen in years.  It is full of run on sentences and overuse of metaphor and such that it is exhausting to try to read.  I gave up after 4 pages, but it was too late to return it.

I bought this book based on the marketing and reviews (the description of the story was a tale of a marriage as it unravels told from the viewpoint of the characters)--it was a major mistake for me. The author's writing is hard to read and follow. I am a voracious reader of all types of literature but the prose here is stilted and written in a singsong manner that unnecessarily complicates the story. This book will appeal to a very narrow group of readers who enjoy the roundabout hunt for the story woven into the singsong style used by the author. I did not finish the book because I exercised my right as a reader to close and put down a book that had become a painful exercise in frustration. If you enjoy straightforward writing and books that rely on plot, characters, and dialogue to tell the story, you will not enjoy this book. If you enjoy words for the sake of words, a narrator that distances themselves from the story by embroidering the language used, then you will enjoy this book.

I give this book no stars. I read the reviews and thought it would be great. What a huge disappointment . The stream of consciousness writing style, with its rambling and lack of punctuation, makes reading this book a chore. Furthermore, the character studies were very shallow. Wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.

Stream of conscoiusness writing at its worst! Repetitious and garbled. Gave up half way through. Should never have been published.

Well... I do not recommend it. I purchased the book becuase of the website promotion made it sound wonderful. But, I really don't like the writing style of run on sentence after run on sentence. It's like a mind dump and I don't find it interesting or funny or creative. I wish I could send the book back and get my money back. I ready a variety of books and enjoy different stlyes and topics, but this I do not recommend.

Had not read a Kincaid novel in awhile . The run-on sentences took some getting used to. I had read reviews prior to purchase and knew that this was somewhat autobiographical. I felt her utter dissolving of both marriage Nd herself . Nice job of showing the feelings of estrangement from family, husband and community .

Did not finish it. Got bored, hard to get into the story line.

I had to put the book down - the text was one long run-on sentence, almost like a stream of consciousness. Very difficult to get a sense of the story. Was looking forward to it but very disappointed

This book is terrible. I was unable to finish reading it. I am surprised BN sent this out as a book to read. I wish I had my Monty back.

Masterpiece!  The truths of marriage as told by a Master of a form few use because it requires a master.  Kudos Jamaica Kincaid!

In all fairness I have only gotten to page 20. I have only gotten that far because I was hoping it would start making some sense!! This book was recommended by Cosmo magazine. I wasted $11. I feel like I am reading the diary of an insane person. With crazy ramblings, it just makes no sense. I will not finish reading this book.
