The lives of a woman on the run from a man to whom she was betrothed and a wealthy recluse and his two live-in servants become entwined in England during World War 1. With each person having been touched by the war, they sift through the pieces of their lives, believing themselves to be safe in their isolation, both from their pasts and from the war itself, but fate has other plans.
