Damn-It-Jim-I'm-A-"Doctor" McCoy is the focus of what purports to be the very last Star Trek adventure. When the story begins--sometime after the events of "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country"--the Enterprise is en route to Earth, where it will be decommissioned and its senior officers retired. But a civil war is brewing on Ssan, where a cult of assassins, led by the charismatic but malevolent Shil Andrachis, seeks power. The Enterprise is diverted to Ssan partly because of McCoy's experiences with the cult some years before--in fact, he saved Andrachis' life. The plot gets sadder and more complicated for McCoy when the man who stole his wife some 30 years before and Jocelyn--that same ex-wife--join the mission as expert negotiators. Clay Treadway, Jocelyn's current husband, is foolhardy, but when McCoy questions the man's judgment he appears to be allowing his personal feelings to interfere with his work. McCoy is vindicated, however, when Treadway underestimates the cult's deadliness and gets the entire Enterprise crew trapped. Jocelyn and McCoy's love is rekindled but then--after saving the day--Jocelyn must die, despite McCoy's best efforts to save her. Full of sorrow, McCoy resumes his journey home, where he will retire. Really? Anyhow, Friedman--who has written nine other Star Trek novels--turns in his usual smooth performance.
