Overview

Still Kicking (The Lainie Lovett Mysteries, #1) by Judith Arnold

Lainie Lovett has three passions: her two nearly-grown children, her fourth-grade students at the Hopwell School, and the Rockettes, her recreational soccer team. One evening after soccer practice, she’s startled to spot the husband of one of her teammates canoodling with another woman in a local eatery. She’s even more shocked when he turns up dead the next day. And more shocked yet when she winds up under suspicion as an accessory to murder. But Lainie is smart and she’s stubborn. She’ll figure out who killed her teammate’s husband—if she can stay out of jail, if she can stay alive, and if she can hang onto her sense of humor.

“Still Kicking is a wonderful, fast-paced, cozy, page turner that will keep your interest to the last page.” – The Midwest Book Review

“ Lainie Lovett is smart, sassy, and up to her shin guards in trouble when she offers evidence to the police during a murder investigation. Suddenly she’s the suspect! Don’t miss this mystery, or you’ll kick yourself for it!” Lorna Barrett, New York Times bestselling author

I thought this had the right mix of humor and murder mystery. There was sex but no details which is wonderful. Im not interested in others details. I enjoyed it the book and will probably buy the rest of the series. I really like how the heroine thought.

Enjoyable book, first in a series. Unique sleuth is a widowed, soccer playing, fourth grade teacher . Setting is a small town New England suburb. Believable characters and entertaining dialogue.

This book was about 100 pages too long , and if she mentioned the gym teacher's poytail and diamond stud one more time I was going to scream!

I'm on page 190 of a 270 page book and can not believe how many times ( at least 50 & probably more that quote " $150,000.00 stolen, no new playground eqipment & no luncheon for the teachers") VERY VERY annoying. Plus Lainie & her son & daughter eat, son takes van & goes to visit friends but a friend of Lainie's comes to visit just a few minutes later & pulls past son's van. I do think I will like it, but could be 50 pages less without all the repeats & totally lot uneccesary descriptions of things. Hope it gets better. GJRA

Arnold's characters are well written. The ladies in the PTO actually remind me of the ladies in our PTO. This is a fun read that doesn't take forever to get into. Looking forward to more.

The synopsis of this book on the BN Nook site was about the primary character solving a murder which she was arrested as an accomplice of. THE actual story was about a mystery that happened weeks after this murder mystery. It was very confusing. I would of liked to read about how the murder mystery was solved, instead of getting small glimpses about the supposed first book.

It wasn't terrible at all, but I had a hard time relating to Lainie and it was really slow for me. I guess I'm not a fan of random everyday people sticking their noses in murder investigations, but I can understand why she did it and it obviously worked out.

3.5 stars. Meh. I'm a longtime Judith Arnold fan. Why didn't I love it? I didn't realize this was a mystery when I bought it, but I was in the mood for something different. Romantic suspense has become so gory that I had resolved to try a cozy mystery. This book lays a good foundation for a series. But the first half of the story is so mundane that it's snoozy rather than cozy. Also a heroin who should know better makes amazingly stupid decisions, and there are some holes in the plot. Judith Arnold has written way better novels than this one. That said, I'm about to buy the second in the series hoping that it gets better.
