TEACHER FROM HELL
This book recounts a series of unfortunate events leading to one man standoff on April 24, 2009; a senior teacher forced a school evacuation and risked his life under the scope of police snipers after being verbally abused, assaulted, falsely accused, humiliated, slandered, reassigned, discredited, fined, arrested, jailed and then released to be forced into early retirement.
The NY post and the buzz of sensationalism clustered the newswire with alarming Headlines: Teacher From Hell threatens to blow up school... Teacher barricades himself in classroom.... Unhinged teacher refuses to be reassigned... Armed and Dangerous veteran teacher goes berserk... Kid-smacker holds students hostages... Teacher held a gun to his head.... Teacher set a computer bomb in a school library...
But someone else -not the teacher- called 911 and said there was a bomb in the school!.. As you may have expected, the police responded in precautionary force to set up a safety perimeter; 1500 children were evacuated, three bomb squads combed the building, two sniper zeroed-in locking for target from nearby roof tops, fire marshal, SWAT teams, school safety and citywide emergency response units converged to the scene.
A potentially deadly situation defused as dust settled down two hours later with mediation by the UFT. The teacher surrendered, was arrested, booked, psychiatrically examined, arraigned and released in 48 hours without bail. No one was hurt, no guns, no bomb or any type of explosive were found. The confusing scare have been caused by a misinformed panic-calling in reaction to a one-hour hunger strike staged as a protest for a litany of safety violations; a labor dispute between a senior teacher and a tyrannical, young & inexperienced principal.
An examination of the 30 years career shows that because of his militant views, Mr. Garabitos has been in direct conflict with various principals and the office of Special Investigation (OSI). However 20 of 22 allegations have been found unsubstantiated and even though he accepted four reprimand letters, he was never convicted of a crime or arrested. The list of comparative issues show the immense risk and challenges of teaching the American Underclass left behind by years of neglect. The record shows that he survived through a hell-like battleground of school reforms; Bilingual education, Sex education, Teacher Training, Gay rights, School construction, Computer education, Special education, Art and Music, Small class size, Parental Involvement, Testing, Charters Schools, Mayoral control and multiple labor union disputes.
