A thorough and instructive guide to the yogasana teachings of the father of modern yoga
Sri T. Krishnamacharya (1888-1989) was the most influential figure in the last 100 years in the field of yoga. Many of today's best-known yoga teachers-including his brother-in-law B. K. S. Iyengar, his son T. K. V. Desikachar, and Pattabhi Jois, founder of Ashtanga yoga-studied with him and modeled their own yoga styles after his practice and teaching. Yet, despite his renowned status, Krishnamacharya's wisdom has never before been made completely available, just as he taught it. Now, in The Complete Book of Vinyasa Yoga, Srivatsa Ramaswami-Krishnamacharya's longest-standing student outside his own family-presents his master's teachings of yogasanas in unprecedented detail.
Drawing upon his 33 years of direct study, beginning in 1955 and continuing nearly until his teacher's death, Ramaswami presents more than nine hundred poses and variations in logically structured sequences, precisely describing Krishnamacharya's complete Vinyasakrama system. Along with every movement of each yoga posture, he covers the proper breathing techniques for each pose-something no other book also derived from Krishnamacharya's teaching does. Nearly 1,000 full-color photographs are featured in this authoritative landmark presentation of the study practiced by the "grandfather of modern yoga."

Srivatsa Ramaswami's book 'The Complete Book of Vinyasa Yoga' is a rare gift which brings Sri T. Krishnamacharya's teaching directly from Ramaswami to us. It is a reference book that I believe every yoga student and teacher will want to have in their library. Not for the book to sit on the shelf, but to be used in a practical way again and again. Ramaswami has taken all of the elements of this very complex subject matter, covering the many aspects of a rich yoga practice: asanas, pranayama, bandhas, and the vinyasas, and set them out simply and with exquisite detail. Add to this the bonus of the CD of Ramaswami's beautiful chanting of the Yoga Sutras and other meaningful chants, many of which he chanted together with Krishnamacharya, and we really do have a book on yoga which is 'Complete'.
The Complete Book of Vinyasa Yoga is a practical and treasured practice manual for those interested in classical yoga. Having studied with Srivatsa Ramaswami for the pasts 7 years, I would like to urge readers to pay particular attetion to the tadasana sequence, the first set of movements in the 'On Your Feet Yogasanas' section of his book. These vinyasas (variations and movements) which are matched to the inhalation/exhalation are a very important component of Krishnamacharaya's teaching this wise combination of linking movements synchronized wtih the ujjayi breath while standing with complete balance is truly profound. The entire body is involved and the movements and benefits are easily attainable to students of all levels of practice. Another practical aspect of this book is the system used to rate the degree of difficulty for each asana. By following the red diamonds next to the photographs the student or teacher can put together a complete practice with the proper sequencing for his or her own level of training. Srivasta Ramaswami was also taught many Vedic chants by his guru Krishnamacharya, this book comes with a CD that includes ten Vedic peace chants, the Gayatri mantra, Shiva mantras, an invocation to Ganesha and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali any one of these chants can be used to begin or end your practice. These are just a few unique charaterstics of this book. A true treasure!
