The Gathering Dusk (Killer Instinct Series) by Cynthia Eden

Don't miss the heart-pounding prequel novella to bestselling author Cynthia Eden's new Killer Instinct series

When untried FBI profiler Samantha Dark is face-to-face with a killer, there's no room for fear. Her best weapon is her instincts. Those same dark impulses that allow her to get inside the mind of a murderer, to locate victims—or to pull the trigger before she's next. She can't afford to have those instincts clouded by anything…especially her far-too-sexy new partner.

Former SEAL Blake Gamble plays everything by the book. Except, of course, when it comes to the increasingly simmering attraction between them. But when a vengeful serial killer targets them both, Samantha once again reaches into the sinister, shadowed part of herself. Even as she begins to fear that the only way to catch this killer is to become one…

Look for After the Dark, the first in the Killer Instinct series, from HQN Books!

This novella is a prequel to the author's Killer Instinct Series. Samantha Dark is an FBI Profiler. On her first field case, she 's aware of her ability to get into the mind of a killer, to find their victims, and to pull the trigger when necessary. Facing the latest serial killer to become headlines, Samantha is forced to shoot the killer to death. Fortunately, his latest victim is found alive. Former SEAL Blake Gamble is Samantha's partner. He's a play-by-the-book enforcer and wants nothing more than to take down the bad guys and put them away. Both have secrets .... and the attraction between them is heating up. And they both know the boundaries they must keep in order to maintain not only their professional partnership, but to protect the secrets they have. Samantha is having a hard time not feeling guilty about taking a human life, but she thinks the case is over. It isn't. This is a short story/novella of approximately 60 pages, so it's a real quick read. For such a short story, there's a lot packed into it. It's suspenseful with a surprise ending. No cliff hanger even if this is the beginning of what looks like a very good series. The characters are likable, if not secretive.

THE GATHERING DUSK is the introductory novella in Cynthia Eden’s contemporary, adult KILLER INSTINCT romantic, suspense series. Told from several third person perspectives THE GATHERING DUSK introduces FBI profiler Samantha Dark, and former SEAL and FBI agent Blake Gamble as they search for a serial killer and his latest victim. As a profiler Samantha was able to get into the head of the person responsible for destroying so many lives, and along with her partner Blake Gamble, the couple diffused a volatile situation before it could get any worse. What ensues is Samantha’s struggle with guilt and her past, and the realization that the serial killer may not have been working alone. THE GATHERING DUSK is a very quick read; a story of suspense that reveals a little of the relationship dynamic between Samantha and Blake, as well as the friendship our heroine holds dear with former lover Dr. Cameron Latham. The premise is intriguing and sets the stage for the next installment AFTER THE DARK.

I probably will not continue with the story in future publications as it is just too violentl / sad. The obscene violence that the FBI characters investigate reminds me of the TV series, Criminal Minds. I wonder sometimes if much of the local bizaar violence we hear reported in the news is a result of the massive amount of these types of crime books and programs. Sorry I can't report a better review, it's just not for me. JDL 3/24/17

I always get so excited when I know of a favorite author starting a new series. I just can't wait to see what they have new for me. Yes, for me. It's my world and they all write for me. One of my favorite authors is Cynthia Eden. I really don't care what she writes, I read it. So like I said, she starting a new series and I'm so excited to try it. Up first is The Gathering Dusk. Now this story is only about 70 pages give or take a few here or there. It starts out the series well. You get to know a little bit about Samantha & Blake who will also be the lead hero & heroine in After the Dark which is out on March 28th. Not to worry, The Gathering Dusk is a complete story. You won't feel like you have to wait for After the Dark to finish the story. I really hate that! After reading this story I can't wait to learn more about Samantha. You get a taste of her but don't really get to know her. You'll be left with so many questions. I love finding out those answers. The only thing you learn about Blake is that he sounds all tough and hot. Oh boy!!! I really need to read more about him.
