THE PUNISHMENTS is a controversial Orwellian thriller set in the near future. It is a story of a heart-pounding struggle of one family after voters unwittingly elect a demagogue and fundamentalist government.

Enormous shifts threaten our way of life - artificial intelligence, robotics, surveillance, human relations, terrorism, Islamic fundamentalism, and the rise of American religious extremism.

The novel's characters battle to hold on to friendship, love, and faith as they are thrust into the center of the largely unreported debate raging beneath the surface of Christianity and identity politics.

One vote against the Citizens Justice & Security Act thrusts Senator William Thatcher, his wife, Carol, a blacklisted Planned Parenthood attorney, and their eleven-year-old son, Billy, onto the dreaded 'enemies list' at the new Department of Virtue.

The government has changed. America is now a biblical nation with crosses everywhere, mandatory prayer time, women subordinate to their husbands and loosing the right to vote. The new Department of Virtue is in charge of making sure each citizen abides by the ten commandments. To push their agenda and make the citizens submissive; The Department of justice arrests high ranking residents and frames them for various crimes. They execute them publicly in an arena and call it the Punishments. There is a terribly high rate of unemployment, homelessness and crime. This is a scary new world that could happen anywhere. I loved the storyline of this book. An alarming plot line considering the state our country is in. It hit very close to home. The biggest thought that I had while reading was "How did they let this happen?" But, like all major events in history, we the people become complacent and do nothing to stop them. And then it is too late. I would have enjoyed more in-depth characters. I liked them all, but I wanted more. I received a copy of the book from Netgalley for an honest review.

Imagine an authoritarian nation-state, the surveillance state at its worst, a new Inquisition utilizing technology to mete out punishment, and secular liberalism/humanism's worst opinions/prejudices about Christianity and traditional morality and you have Winsor's "The Punishments." It is decently written (for which it receives three stars), but unless you buy into the prejudices upon which the story is premised (which I do not), it will likely be underwhelming/disappointing.

It was truly eerie reading this book......with the current political climate what it is right now, I could really see a lot of this coming true. Because people were scared of the way things were headed, they elected a president that made Christianity the only true religion and the biblical law was enforced. There was a Minister of Virtue who directed the carrying out of the punishments, of which stoning to death was the most utilized. Citizens were mandated to wear chips under their skin so that they could be tracked at all times. The use of paper money was discouraged; the government wanted all Christians to use a smart card so that the government could track their every purchase. Planned parenthood was outlawed and all of the employees were blacklisted and unable to find work anywhere. This book is like a modern day version of George Orwell's 1984, only the similarities between the book and the hot topics of today were creepily similar. I would definitely suggest reading this book if nothing else, than to see the possibilities of what could happen.
