The Rumor: A Novel by Elin Hilderbrand

A friendship is tested in this irresistible page-turner from New York Times bestselling author Elin Hilderbrand.

Nantucket writer Madeline King could not have picked a worse time to have writer's block. Her deadline is looming, her bills are piling up, and inspiration is in short supply. Madeline's best friend Grace, is hard at work transforming her garden into the envy of the island with the help of a ruggedly handsome landscape architect. Before she realizes it, Grace is on the verge of a decision that will irrevocably change her life. Could Grace's crisis be Madeline's salvation? As the gossip escalates, and the summer's explosive events come to a head, Grace and Madeline try desperately to set the record straight--but the truth might be even worse than rumor has it.

Note: I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. This book, set in Nantucket, begins at the end of spring and ends at the end of summer. During those months, teenage first loves are questioned, hearts are broken, financial woes abound, marriage vows are tested… all providing grist for the island rumor mill. The lives of the characters in the book are all intertwined… Grace and Madeline are best friends….Grace’s daughter Allegra and Madeline’s son Brick are in a relationship that is tenuous at best…. Eddie, Grace’s husband, owes Madeline and her husband a large sum of money and gets involved in some shady dealings to try to pay them back…Madeline is an author with a serious case of writer’s block and how she overcomes that block threatens her relationship with her BFF… Grace is obsessed with her lovely garden and landscaping, while her escapades with the landscaper add fuel to the rumors flying fast and furious throughout the island. This is a fun summer read and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Grab a beach chair, a glass of iced tea, your sunglasses and go for a visit to Nantucket courtesy of Elin

Better, more thoughtful than the mere beach read this is marketed as. I got this book as a preview and am so glad I had a chance to read it. I had to put it down once and a while to walk away cause you could see where things where going, but that is how life is, if you do this, these are the consequences. Heartfelt and passionate, love at all ages, and containing the story of a very supportive friendship. I enjoyed this book

The Rumor is a typical beach read that Elin Hildebrand is famous for. While interesting to read her writing has become somewhat predictable and I wished it had taken a different turn like the publisher in the book wanted from Madeline. Still I admire her writing and ability especially while being treated for breast cancer. I would recommend the book for someone looking for a lighthearted read.

Disappointed - usually love her books and look forward to reading them every summer.  I just could never connect with any of the characters. Did not finish reading the book.

Sparks Fly! On the small island of Nantucket, someone is having a steamy affair and a marriage is at stake. But when rumors start in Elin Hilderbrand’s The Rumor, a lot of misinformation spreads like a wild fire and reputations are at stake. Is it really Grace or is it Madeline? Who will betray a best friend’s trust and write about the affair to meet an urgent publication deadline? Then,Fast Eddie, a real estate mogul has turned over one deal too many and ends up in the hands of the FBI? Who snitched? Read this fast-paced novel and see which of the islanders will survive the smoldering flames of passion, lies and cover-ups. I could not put it down!
