The Survivalist, Finest Hour by Arthur Bradley

"The Survivalist may be the best post-apocalyptic series out there," raves Steve Erwood of the Disaster Preparedness Blog. "In addition to a steady stream of gunfights with zombie-like mutants, roadway bandits, and opportunistic warlords, the books teach dozens of useful survival tricks. Learn to hotwire cars, construct homemade booby traps, build garbage-powered generators, and retrieve fuel from abandoned gas pumps."

Bryan Foster, author of The Prepper's Handbook, says "It's rare to find books this entertaining that are so well researched." Nicholas Sansbury Smith, author of Extinction Horizon, adds "The Survivalist books are incredibly addictive. They create a cool western vibe not seen since Louis L'Amour's timeless classics."

Finest Hour is the sixth book in a series described as "a cross between Justified and The Walking Dead." An elite group of military assassins are preparing for an assault on the Greenbrier bunker, their mission to remove all traces of President Glass and her supporters. It is up to Deputy Marshal Mason Raines, his giant Irish wolfhound, Bowie, and a beautiful Mossad agent to stop them. But as they race across the country, new dangers threaten to disrupt their plans, including ravagers that terrorize the roadways in armored cars.

When Mason stops to search for munitions at an Army depot, he is recruited by a corps of young cadets to help recover their missing commandant. Little does he know that the depot has become the home for hundreds of bloodthirsty survivors. Pinned down and hopelessly outnumbered, Mason must put his skills and trusty Supergrade to the ultimate test.

Tanner and Samantha depart on a quest to put an end to President Pike's growing tyrannical rule. Along the way, they must confront the most violent of men, including a psychotic Delta Force soldier who has taken to skinning his victims, and a band of Mexican drug dealers that insist on young Samantha's help in recovering their lost payload. Only as they push into the nation's capital, does Samantha realize that Tanner plans to call upon her father's killer to help them survive the terror that fills the tunnels beneath the city.

Tanner and Marshall Raines, my favorite characters, set out to make right some of the obvious wrongs that have been done since the plague was released on society.  These tough men who understand their potential to set things right would not waste any time to do so and spent little time on their reunion to get to it.  Again, we see the men use patience and cunning to clear obstacles and people from their path, as well as brute force when necessary.  They each have a strong female partner in this 6th installment and the relationships with these -- one a romantic relationship and one a mutually-adoptive father/daughter relationship -- are not always in the background of the story.  Tanner and Samantha charm the readers, as always.  More great writing, outstanding dramatic scenarios that are never mundane, and character development with each installment.  Cannot wait for the next installment!

Go on people, read them all. This is a GREAT apocalypse series. When ever I put it down I can't wait to pick it up and start reading again. It's a fast pace read with great characters. And I'm able to visualize what this writer is describing.

The Survivalist, Finest Hour, is an excellent read with its main characters fighting infected as well as drug kingpins. The action sequences are exciting and keep you on the edge of your chair. I love the characters tenacity as they survive difficult situations in a post pandemic era. In addition, Arthur Bradley also includes some survivalist tips woven into the story. For example, Samantha is given a chance to shoe a horse. I highly recommend the entire series. These books are filled with action, survival tips and heroes.

… Rock ‘em Sock ‘em action! Dr. Bradley has done it again! The Survivalist (Finest Hour), the sixth book in his post-apocalyptic fiction series, is an exciting, fast-paced installment in the continuing parallel stories of Deputy Marshal Mason Raines and his ex-convict Father, Tanner Raines. In this volume, Mason, his “wonder dog” Bowie, and his Mossad agent girlfriend, Leila Mizrahi, set out for the not-so-secret government bunker under the Greenbrier Hotel to rescue the true President Glass and her allies from the assassination plot set in motion by the false President Pike and his minion, General Hood. Along the way, they encounter dangerous “Ravagers”, learn Bowie’s back story, and join forces with some valiant military-college cadets to defeat a horde of “Infected” (zombie-like victims of the Super-Pox 99 virus). Tanner and his young charge Samantha “Sam” Glass (the true President’s daughter) have their own mission – to reach Mount Weather and stop President Pike’s evil plans. On their travels, Sam learns some useful lessons such as how to shoe a horse, how to hot-wire a car, and how to calculate the time until sunset using only her hand and the horizon. Tanner, as usual, has his hands full defending Sam but he takes time along the way to fulfill a rather unusual request from a childless couple. The book really held my interest. I had to read it cover to cover – just couldn’t put it down! I’m looking forward to reading the final volume, The Survivalist (Last Stand), which I hope will be available very soon!

Arthur Bradley continues his survivalist series with the 6th of 7 books titled finest hour. He paints a picture in the mind which is believable, interesting and does contain some practical advice and he gives you some things to think about. He also shows the characters in their most tender moments which I find refreshing, Having read all six so far and anxiously awaiting the seventh and the last book of this fine series. There are a few black and white drawings which to me anyway look just as I picture them from the book while reading it, Great job! This has been a cosistent trait in all six books read to date. I urge anyone who is interested in a plausable and realistic SHTF scenario, that you buy and read this whole series! I am glad I did! Tanner and Samantha continue on traveling together to get into trouble as usual. The chapter on the airport is especially good. Meanwhile Mason and Leila also have a mission to potect the President and they too get into their share of problems. Mr Bradley does leave you wanting to know how it will all end up in the last stand. I am anxiously awaiting it's realese later this fall.
