Overview

The Witchling Apprentice by B. Kristin McMichael

Witches, potions, and magical spells—that all made sense, but men turning into an animal-like monsters in the middle of the night? That had to be fiction, right? Wrong. Cassandra Booth thought her world of witches would be complete when she joined her coven. Fate didn’t plan to let that be the case for her. Joining the coven brings new knowledge, like mates and men as animals, all things Cassie would rather not know. As her plans unravel she must find a way to join the coven without committing her life to a guy she once was friends with and now hates.

*This book was received via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review* I enjoyed the plot of this book and it developed at a good pace. There were also some good plot twists and surprises. I did, however, find the main character Cassie quite annoying at times especially as she tended to rush headlong into things. Despite this, I am excited to read the next installment as many questions were left unanswered including about Cassie's heritage, the coven's secrets and the mysteries behind the night humans. I am dying to know more and can't wait to see where the story goes.

Title: Witchling Apprentice - Skinwalkers Book 1 Author: B Kristin McMichael Published: 3-15-2016 Publisher: Lexia Press LLC Pages: 229 Genre: Sci Fi Fantasy Sub Genre: Teens & Young Adults; Paranormal; Urban Fantsy ISBN: 13-978-1941745007 ASIN: B01A9NGFBK Reviewer: DelAnne Reviewed For: NetGalley Rating: 4 Stars . I received a copy of Witchling Apprentice from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review. Cassie has come home with the plans to take her exams to become an apprentice witch. What she does not realize is there is a price to pay for the acceptance into the coven. Knowledge of things she will come regret knowing, like the prophecy of her future and the mate she neither wants nor cares about. Then the other witches, friends and family begin to disappear. Can she find them and solve the mysteries surrounding the coven before she too disappears. The Witchling Apprentice is a trilogy in which the main character Cassie returns home to her village after her adventures in a previous series, Day Human Trilogy which I have not read so I can not say if that affects a reader's understanding of the book. I can tell you I personally had no trouble following the events taking place in this series. I did find that while some situations are resolved, the novel does end with the reader looking to the second book to carry on the story. If you are looking for a stand alone story then keep looking, but if you are willing to read a great opening to a three book series (which luckily the other two books are available now, then this is where your search ends. There are strong fascinating characters, an intricate plot and an ending that leaves you wanting more. Which luckily for the reader is readily available. My rating is 4 out of 5 stars.

B. Kristin McMichael’s The Witchling Apprentice is an amazing start to the Skinwalkers Witchling Series. I just loved this book. The story takes place after the last book in the Day Human Trilogy. Cassandra Booth is back in her village after secretly helping the Sidhe. She decides to take the test to become a Witches Apprentice early. She discovers that the entire town has been keeping secrets from her, and that she is part of a prophecy. The Witchling Apprentice is a contemporary fantasy suitable for young adults. I love Cassie. She is destined to be a powerful witch. As she got older and her powers began to manifest, she never felt like she truly fit in. She only has a couple of friends, Whitney and Owen. Cassie’s parents died. She has been raised by her uncle John. Her aunt Maria is in trouble for taking Cassie out of the village; luckily, they didn’t know they were in the Fae Realm or her punishment would have been worse. Maria has been sent away on missions outside of their village and not around to help Cassie with all the fallout after her test. As Cassie discovers the things that have been withheld from her, it becomes harder to know who she can trust. Cassie is a great character. She is smart, brave, and clever. I enjoyed Nathaniel Bay’s character. He was friends with Cassie as a child. He became part of the popular crowd and no longer seemed interested in her until she took her test. It takes a while to figure out his allegiances. He is a powerful character that is to be reckoned with. B. Kristin McMichael does a fantastic job with every aspect of this book. The plot was amazing. It was full of mystery and twist. The conflict is intense and believable. The characters are well-developed. The setting is descriptive. The book was exciting from being to end. I feel like it has been awhile since I have had a book hangover from not getting enough sleep because I could not put The Witchling Apprentice down. It was well worth the lack of sleep. I cannot wait until the next book. Complimentary copy provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
