About the Author

Dennis Kimbro, PhD, is the author of Think and Grow Rich: A Black Choice and Daily Motivations for African-American Success. A tireless educator, public speaker, and business consultant, he has written for numerous newspapers and magazines and has made many appearances on programs ranging from Today to the PBS special The Legacy of Achievement with Dennis Kimbro. He is a professor at Clark Atlanta University School of Business. Dr. Kimbro is married and the father of three daughters and has three grandchildren. He lives in Atlanta, Georgia.

Napoleon Hill was born in 1883 in Virginia and had a long and successful career as a lecturer, author, and consultant to business leaders. His Think and Grow Rich is the all-time bestseller in its field, having sold millions of copies worldwide, and setting the standard for today's motivational thinking. He died in 1970.

If you want to do life and quit letting life do you, you'll read and re-read this book. You will find your nitch in life through this book!!!!

A number of years ago, my father purchased this book. While I was allowed to read through it during the holiday visit, I was not allowed to take it home, as I had done with so many of his books (and neckties). I was therefore compelled to purchase my own copy, and was very satisfied with this investment.

This book, while not unveiling any new end of the world secrets, does in fact allow the reader to put into perspective thoughts and actions that will assist in planning for the future. The book is rife with examples of inspiring individuals that have succeeded with their life goals. This is then followed with real insight and advice on how to logically implement plans and actions to achieve the individual success that one can envision for themselves.
It is amazing that the core of this book was written a number of years before for the general population of this country. However, this updated edition that is enhanced by Dennis Kimbro is just as relevant today as it was then. I had the good fortune of meeting Dr. Kimbro in Houston a number of years ago, and he is just as inspiring in person as he is in the printed word.
Reading this book literally helped change my life and the way that I look at things. You would be wise to read it now, and re-read it periodically as a parity check on your progress. There will inevitably be some smaller concept that was missed on your last reading.

This is the beginning and the end to self empowerment literacy. I have never read a self help book as powerful as this. It can be apprieciated by all people not just Black people. I first read this book close to ten years ago and it still impacts my thinking today. And every now and then when I feel defeated I open it to restart my fire to win!!

After reading this book, I immediately began to take on life differently. Before this book I didn't believe in myself and my confidence level was down and as soon as I finished reading it, good things began to happen. All this was due to my new found confidence and my new 'I Can and I Will' attitude.

After reading this book I had the strenghth to continue on making my dream come true. This book touches on things that deep inside you already know or have heard. This was a reminder of how my Mom brought me up giving me support in being whatever I wanted to be.

Preparation is definitely the key! It becomes important that we know about the rules that will ultimately determine our success. Not just to know their meanings and what they do, but to make these principles a part of us - a habit that will lead us to do the right thing automatically, regardless of the circumstances. As Kimbro said, ¿it is our job as Black Americans to disentangle the myths, misconceptions, and half - truths that clouds the judgments of our society¿. All, regardless of race or class or economic status, are entitled to a fair chance and to the tools for developing their individual powers of mind and spirit to the utmost. This promise means that all children by virtue of their own efforts, competently guided, can hope to attain the mature and informed judgment needed to secure gainful employment, and to manage their own lives, thereby serving not only their own interests but also the progress of society itself. Also noted by Kimbro, ¿Blacks as a whole have moved from a position of utter destitution - in terms of wealth, education, and human rights - to a place alongside their ethnic counterparts¿. Black males, particularly, have edged precariously close to becoming an endangered species. There are more Black males in prison and correctional facilities than on college campuses. Functional illiteracy among minority youth may run as high as 40 percent. The search for solutions to our educational problems must also include a commitment to life-long learning. Learning is the indispensable investment required for success but without life-long learning, one's skills will become rapidly dated. This would also reverse the current declining trend--a trend that stems more from weakness of purpose, confusion of vision, under use of talent, and lack of leadership, than from conditions beyond our control. We as Black Americans need to realize that we do not simply exist, we need to always realize what our life will be, and what we will become in the next moment. I took liberty to expand upon the following: THE PRESIDENT¿S NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION (During Reagan era, still suitable today): The report called for greater federal support of education and included the claim that the nation was threatened by 'a rising tide of mediocrity'. A Nation at Risk is a reform based on the development of standards-based curricula. The focus is on outcomes of education in relation to standards of achievement, the idea being that student achievement and instructional programs were likely to improve. One of the most quoted portions of this report came from the introduction just after the 'Rising Tide' remark. It said: 'If an unfriendly foreign power had attempted to impose on America the mediocre educational performance that exists today, we might well have viewed it as an act of war. As it stands, we have allowed this to happen to ourselves. We have even squandered the gains in student achievement made in the wake of the Sputnik challenge. Moreover, we have dismantled essential support systems, which helped make those gains possible. We have, in effect, been committing an act of unthinking, unilateral educational disarmament'. The following five recommendations were made by the report: Content Recommended that the graduation requirements for all students be raised to include 4 years of English, 3 years of mathematics, 3 years of science, 3 years of social studies, 1 semester of computer science, and for college bound students 2 years of foreign language. Standards and Expectations Schools should expect better academic performance and behavior from students and universities should strengthen admissions requirements. Time More time should be spent on the new required courses by being more efficient and by lengthening the school day and year. I¿ve read this book a few times during and after college. I¿ve begun working on career #2 in sales and I¿m not giving up because I¿m sure I¿m ¿3 feet from striking gold.¿ Think and Grow Rich is a great read because it¿s told through timeless stories ¿ that WILL motivate you to reach your goals in life. I¿m in the interview process for a few different sales opportunities and just finished another great read called the Sales Adventure Guide. Like Hill¿s book, The Sales Adventure Guide uses real life examples and is reality based¿not a bunch of mumbo-jumbo. I picked up my copy on a stop over at the San Francisco airport. Both of these books are guiding me through the transition from project manager to High-Tech sales pro. Read - Think & Grow Rich and The Sales Adventure Guide. Never give-up! Deb

I got the audio version, and found it to be common sense advice with a tiny supernatural element. It teaches positive thinking and imagination but balances it with advising one does more than just think it but also do it.
