Twisted: The Girl Who Uncovered Rumpelstiltskin's Name by Bonnie M Hennessy

An old tale tells the story of how a little man named Rumpelstiltskin spins straw into gold and tricks a desperate girl into trading away her baby. But that’s not exactly how it happened.

The real story begins with a drunken father who keeps throwing money away on alcohol and women, while his daughter, Aoife, runs the family farm on her own. When he gambles away everything they own to the Duke, it is up to her to spin straw into gold to win it all back.

With her wits and the help of a magical guardian, she outsmarts the Duke and saves her family.
Well almost…

Her guardian suddenly turns on Aoife and sends her on a quest to find his name, the clues to which are hidden deep in the woods, a moldy dungeon, and a dead woman’s chamber.
This is not the tale of a damsel in distress, but a tenacious, young woman who solves a mystery so great that not even the enchanted man who spins straw into gold can figure it out.
Not until Aoife comes along.

About the Author

Bonnie grew up a shy, quiet girl who the teachers always seated next to the noisy boys because they knew she was too afraid to talk to anyone. She always had a lot she wanted to say but was too afraid to share it for fear she might die of embarrassment if people actually noticed her. Somewhere along the line, perhaps after she surprised her eighth grade class by standing up to a teacher who was belittling a fellow student, she realized that she had a voice and she didn’t burst into flames when her classmates stared at her in surprise. Not long after that, she began spinning tales, some of which got her into trouble with her mom. Whether persuading her father to take her to the candy store as a little girl or convincing her parents to let her move from Los Angeles to Manhattan to pursue a career at eighteen as a ballet dancer with only $200 in her pocket, Bonnie has proven that she knows how to tell a compelling story. Now she spends her time reading and making up stories for her two children at night. By day she is an English teacher who never puts the quiet girls next to the noisy boys and works hard to persuade her students that stories, whether they are the ones she teaches in class or the ones she tells to keep them from daydreaming, are better escapes than computers, phones, and social media.

I will admit, I expected an interesting read with this one. went so far beyond my expectations! This author created characters all of whom had flaws and strengths. Worth the read, folks! I am looking forward to reading more from this author.

This is a great story. (Amazing for a free one, actually.) It's somewhat inherently limited because it is a retelling of a classic tale but it still had some new twists in it and there is some beautiful word smithing in it.

Cleverly drawing on a favored fairy tale, the author draws you into to this almost familiar story. A fun read and well written.

I truly enjoyed this new take on an old fairy tale. There remains the magic of the original tale, but Ms. Hennessy has given the story so much more depth and color by providing the characters, both old and new, with human fears and desires unexpected when I initially read the reviews. I found it very difficult to put this book down. I will be adding this writer to my "Authors to Watch" list. Give the book a try. There really is no excuse as the book is free for your e-reader. Even if it wasn't free, I believe you will really enjoy it!

Wow and Kudos to the 10th power! Im a prolific reader, and need top shelf writing, and this book was just that! When I saw that the premse of the book was based on a childs tale, I was a bit concerned. But from page 1, that concern was effectively banished! When a book plays out as a mental movie, the writer/artist has hit the sweet spot. Total immersion into the story occurred herein, and I thank the author for sharing her gift. DMB

Firstly my compliments to the author for the fast and free read. Though I have mixed feelings about the premise of the book, I found it hard put down. The connection between dark fairytales and the darkness in our hearts is clear in Twisted. It gets messy for me when the healing of those hearts demands much more of our heroine than is fair. Though Aoife has many alternative imaginings of what a happy ending for herself would look like throughout the story, she is ultimately forced to play the Little Mans twisted game and do the work of healing the broken people in her life over and over again at great personal cost. Her ability to love unconditionally frees the people around her while keeping her trapped herself. For a story about a tenacious young woman "not a damsel in distress" I couldn't help but feel disappointed by this. And exhausted with the behavior of the people who are supposed to love her. While the fairytale aspects, the magic, the secrets uncovered, the twists and turns were imaginative and engaging - they were slightly diminished in the shadow of the men in Aoife's life who took advantage of her love from start to finish. I found this fairytale to be more murky than dark, but it was a thought provoking read. The cost to Aoife was high, but the cost to read this book is remarkably low - certainly worth a look.

Loved this book, loved the twist, and although there were some cliches in terms of the characters, I still thought they were enjoyable. Looking forward to this author's next book!
