Overview

Winchester: Over (Winchester Undead Book 1) by Dave Lund

After a large scale surprise attack, the mortality rate soars among the population. The detonation of multiple nuclear warheads high in the atmosphere above North America leaves the country in chaos, the EMP destroying all the tools and devices of our modern lives. Following the EMP, the next attack, using Chemtrails, unleashes a virus that steals death from humanity, leaving the dead to rise to hunt the living. An ancient virus, tracing its discovery through modern history and the fall of Nazi Germany, now perfected and released is more powerful than could have ever been imagined. Bexar Reed and his family, along with their lifelong friends and fellow preppers, were prepared for the end of the world as we know it. They thought they were prepared for nearly every possibility, but they never thought the dead would rise to hunt the living.

Winchester: Over is the first book in the new Winchester Undead zombie series written by Dave Lund. The world has been attacked by China with a very old virus that has been manipulated into turning people into the walking dead. At the same time, China hit everyone with an EMP attack that wiped out all electronics, communication, utilities, etc. Bexar and his two best friends, Jack and Malachi have planned for a disaster. They quickly set their plan in motion and get their families on the road to their safe place. The story is also following a government agent, Cliff, whose sole job is to get the government back up and running in case of a disaster. Things don’t work out quite the way any of them planned, though. This is a great start to what I hope will continue to be a great series. I like that in this series our own government is not who caused the zombies. Cliff is an adaptable, likeable, very capable person, as is Bexar and his wife Jessie. The others are also likeable and all are believable. I, personally, didn’t connect with any one person, but with parts of each person. Human nature is shown very clearly. At one point Bexar’s group comes upon a roadblock. Then they are attacked by a biker gang. This clearly shows that there are always going to be those who take advantage of a situation, no matter how bad it is. We also see and feel a parent’s anguish his child is gunned down and the sadness of a friend having to kill an infected friend. Would we be as strong? David Lund has written a story with a lot of moving parts. However, he is keeping the parts consistent and bringing them together smoothly. I look forward to reading more of this series. The series is a great read for those who enjoy zombie stories. Young adults would also enjoy this series. Pick up the first book and enjoy.

This well written book extolls the virtues of being prepared for any possible situation as these three families have done. Cleverly coming together to put together a hidden stash of supplies to include weapons, food, and such to help them get through the immediate fallout. Sadly, no one thought about the routes that would have to be taken to get to the hidden site. Even the government’s failsafe plan was not the best, although their faith was placed in a man of honor who is doing his best to ensure the continuation of the United States government as best he can. While everyone had contingency plans in case of an emergency, sadly no one expected what was to come, nor did the enemy expect that men of honor would stand to resurrect the country. I cannot wait to get my hands on book 2 in this series.
