THE GOLDEN CAGE (A Dance of Dragons #0.5)

In the land of Ourthuro, cruelty is a way of life. The king rules with an iron fist and no one dare defy him--no one except his daughter. Princess Leena is keeping a dangerous secret, she has fallen in love with a soldier and it would mean both of their lives if her father ever discovered their affair.

But Leena will risk it all to be with the man she loves--her heart, her life, her freedom. And when her brother's birthday celebration takes a dangerous turn, Leena is forced to make a decision that will change the fate of her nation and eventually the world.

THE SHADOW SOUL (A Dance of Dragons #1)

When Jinji's home is destroyed, she is left with nowhere to run and no one to run to--until she meets Rhen, a prince chasing rumors that foreign enemies have landed on his shores. Masquerading as a boy, Jinji joins Rhen with vengeance in her heart. But traveling together doesn't mean trusting one another, and both are keeping a deep secret--magic. Jinji can weave the elements to create master illusions and Rhen can pull burning flames into his flesh.

But while they struggle to hide the truth, a shadow lurks in the night. An ancient evil has reawakened, and unbeknownst to them, these two unlikely companions hold the key to its defeat. Because their meeting was not coincidence--it was fate. And their story has played out before, in a long forgotten time, an age of myth that is about to be reborn...

Enter the world of Whylrhen, Jinji, and Leena all three are elementals and just learning they may have a purpose other than being different. An interesting and sometimes harsh world filled with greed and mistrust among the rulers. Refusal to listen to or consider the opinions of anyone, I sometimes felt these kings only got what they deserved. The innocents are the ones who need protecting, especially the new infant king of the Whyl empire. Can't wait to see what happens when Leena is a part of the mix. Will these three young people be able to get past their trust issues and work together for the benefit of all against a much greater evil? Let's hope so.. Characters are flawed and all too human. You can't help but come to love them and root for their causes. I hope their individual losses and pain can be resolved during their ongoing struggle which will, no doubt, occur in the next book of this interesting series. Well written with only a few grammar and syntax errors. I thoroughly enjoyed this two book bundle. I recommend it to any who enjoy fantasy. Good character development and interesting story line. As soon as I can afford it I will purchase the remainder of this series to see how it concludes!

I received a free copy via goodreads group shut up and read for a honest review. 0.5 book: It was a great short story, but I felt really sorry for Leena and Mikza. I wish they had happy ending.(Maybe It's not  Over?)  First book, I enjoyed reading it very much! I like Jinji and Rhen and can't wait for some romance. It was interesting and I didn't want to put it down. I look forward to the next book. I recommend this book for everybody who love fantasy and ya.

Characters and world seems to be solid, believeable, and each their own individuality. Ember is such a sweet bonus! Looking forward to the rest of this story.

I read a lot of free books on my nook and this story is one of my faves. I like that the main characters don't get a "teacher" right away and we are left to learn about the world as the characters do. Will have to buy the sequel!

I had never read anything by this author but I will now buy any books by this author that I see. I usually reserve that statement for well-read and beloved authors.

(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a review). (This review may contain spoilers). I found myself quite enjoying reading this book. The novella at the beginning wasn't really long, but I felt it was a good introduction to the world and the characters. I did feel sorry for Leena in the first story. She was quite naive, but I felt that made sense with her upbringing. Leena's country was also particularly vicious. I noticed there was a contrast between the two main kingdoms. I felt the author did a really good job of showing the different cultures in the kingdoms... and also how different Jinji's people were in comparison to the rest of the world. I did like Jinji and Rhen as characters. It was good that the author stuck to limited third person, because it wasn't so confusing to read. I really liked their interactions and although I felt like parts of the story were glossed over, I did feel that the important parts were handled well. It was interesting to see Rhen's decision to be a spymaster and how his reputation was so at odds with his personality. I was quite sad to see his relationship with his family, though. Bad childhoods seem to happen a lot in fantasy... I liked the contrast in the different powers Rhen and Jinji had. I also felt that the traumatic events each had gone through were handled really well. It was also good to see Jinji, at least, interact with Leena from the previous story. There weren't a lot of minor characters who appeared and were named, but the ones who were came across as really interesting and well-rounded. I especially liked getting glimpses of Rhen's relationship with the Captain of the ship he and Jinji were on. I did feel that the author did a good job of keeping to the knowledge that the characters had when it switched over to their POVs, which was good. And it was nice to see the way their friendship grew and how real it felt. I was left somewhat confused by the end of the book, but I'm hoping that answers will be provided in the next books in this series. I do intend to read those at some point in the future. This was a good fantasy with an intriguing world and storyline and I hope to see more of Rhen and Jinji.
