Between Darkness and Light (Sholan Alliance Series #7) by Lisanne Norman

The seventh book in Lisanne Norman's Sholan Alliance long-running science fiction series of alien contact and interspecies conflict

In the midst of unrest on his home world of Shola, Kusac has chosen to undertake a secret mission of which only those in the highest echelons of the Brotherhood are aware. And even they are not privy to all the information Kusac has uncovered, nor all the plans he has made.

Carrie and Kaid have not been told the truth. So when Kusac flees Shola, seemingly abandoning his responsibilities, his Triad, and his clan, Carrie is devastated and Kaid is furious. Yet Carrie will not give up on Kusac, certain he will one day return to explain his actions.

But whether Kusac and his elite team can actually accomplish their mission and escape with their lives remains to be seen. For to achieve their goal they must rendezvous with the Valtegan general who is Kusac’s archenemy in the hopes of rescuing Kusac’s young son. But even if he succeeds—branded rebel by his own people, struggling to deal with new powers he scarcely understands, and caught between the machinations of his own god and those of a secret and ancient alien organization—can Kusac hope to regain all that he has lost on Shola?

I have really enjoyed this series from Norman. The originality of her work in the Sholan world has no bound. But after waiting so long for the continuation after this last book, I wonder if this series will ever have a final finishing book that weaves all 'dangling strings' together. A note from the publishers would be nice on this issue by now...

This book did not disappoint. I have read all the books in the series. I find that each book gets better. I love how each character is getting more depth. For instance, Carrie who was worried that her bond to Kusac was just based on their link.. has emerged as a 'stand by your man' woman; not because of their link but because she really likes, trust, and depends on Kusac. More over, General Kezule has bocome a more 'modern' reptile. He embrasses his daughter, wife, people, and ALL of his children. In this book bonds are forged not only by biology, but also politics. I can not wait for the next installment, to see what will happen to ALL of the old and new bonds in the Sholian Alliance.

I felt that the seventh book in this series got lost. A lot of pages but not what I had hoped for in comparison to the others in this series, which by the way I have enjoyed immensley. I found the character of Kusac unbelievable and stupid. I was quite disappointed in this book, but I hope the next one redeems my faith in the series.

This book pick up what left off of Stronghold Rising (the 6th book) where Kusac left Shola on an undercover mission to recover the remaining cub Kezule held hostage. The suspense and the plot of this book was soo extremely good and impressive it kept making me read more to find out what happended as it start to unravel more about Kusac's mission as Kaid is furious at him which also left Carrie distraughted. This is the author's arguably best book out of the entire Sholan Alliance series!! Can't wait to see the 8th book that is if she intended to finish the series with a flair to it.

The triad of Kusac, Carrie, and Kaid know that the unrest on Shola will keep them very busy. However, suddenly everything changes when Kusac does the unthinkable and leaves the planet without a word to his two partners. They even wonder if he has turned traitor. Instead the ruling Brotherhood has assigned Kusac the mission to rescue a Sholan cub held hostage by Valtegan General Kezule. However, instead of success in rescuing the cub, Kusac is captured and his link to his triad partners severed. This makes his people except for loyal Carrie believe he has switched sides but Kusac makes a pact with his deadliest enemy Kezule in an attempt to buy time so he can save his life and that of the child. For behind the scenes orchestrating all the species are the Watchers who do more than idly observe. The seventh Sholan Alliance tale, BETWEEN DARKNESS AND LIGHT, is an exciting thriller that never slows down yet insures the audience believes in the various species populating these novels. The story line is action-packed yet provides deep insight into Kusac and Kezule. Especially intriguing is the loyalty of Carrie, who in spite of overwhelming evidence believes that her triad mate will one day reveal a greater truth. Series fans will have a field day (or two) reading this delightful, but complex tale with multiple subplots that ultimately tie back to the main theme. Newcomers can read this as a satisfying stand alone, but will find it even better if they start at the beginning with book one (see TURNING POINT). Harriet Klausner
