A 48 page well-written free story of kings, princesses, and forbidden love. This is an excerpt to another book and has a cliffhanger ending.

In THE GOLDEN CAGE we are taken back to a time of castles, kings, and forbidden love. Leena has a secret so deep, that leaving the safety of her home is the only way to escape her father's wrath. She is willing to risk hell and high water to be with the man she loves. But will it be enough? There is no denying that this story is well written. The proof is in the words. I loved the flow and the attention the author demands with her writing and imagination. It is a short novella but when reading it, it seemed much longer. You are so caught up in the storyline, you feel as if you've been around these characters before, even though you just met them. You can't help but feel for them. In the end, you want to scream. Scream for justice. Scream for wrongs to be righted. Scream for love to have a happy ending. And in the end, it leaves you wanting more. 5 Stars!

The next person who says books can’t hurt you emotionally will be slapped with this novella. There was one point where I had to put down my Kindle because I was getting so tense and anxious that I couldn’t take it anymore. Then when I started reading again, my heart was literally racing with terror. This novella must be good and I have decided to bestow it with five stars because it got me all tangled up and worried and nervous and angry and generally neurotic. Within the first few pages I was invested in the story. The story itself was rather short, but still managed to break me and I find myself maliciously wishing for some diabolical and distinctly unpleasant fate to befall all but three of the characters. I am looking forward to the novel, but hope those characters’ tales take a happier twist than what happened here. My only complaint would probably be that there was a supporting character who plays a significant role and I wish he had been introduced or at least hinted at sooner. His emergence just felt kind of sudden and I think that could have been handled more smoothly. All in all, another book to add to my list of novellas that broke my heart in under 100 pages. I recommend it to fans of YA fantasy who don’t mind a sad, open ended read.

Awesome novella! Filled with action and romance, I'm definitely moving on to the next book in the series!

This was a good book for teens and YA. It's about a princess who falls in love w/her bodyguard, they are gonna run away together, but her father stops their plans. *****spoiler for me this book was very predictable. It was written well, GL to Ms Davis!

“The Golden Cage” by Kaitlyn Davis is a quick, compelling introduction to the world of Ourthuro. Leena is a sympathetic princess seeking to be with the one man she loves. Leena’s father, the king, rules his country and household with an iron fist. Women are not honored in Ourthuro and in just a handful of pages, I grew to detest the king and the male-centered culture. The treatment of women and the individuals below nobility was heart-wrenching and Leena’s kind heart (and mine) were sickened by the actions of others. This short story is definitely a teaser piece for the larger series. I wanted to know more about Ourthuro and Leena. Will she find love? Will she find freedom? Who in the kingdom can she trust? I’m definitely keeping an eye on the series and hope to read more once the series is complete. This review was originally posted on Second Run Reviews.
