Hipsters and foodies will love this beginner's guide to canning, which makes a great case for how easy and inexpensive making your own pickles, jams, soups, and stews can be (after an initial investment in equipment). The book walks you through everything you need to know, from the grocery store to the kitchen, including what kind of jars to buy, the best times to buy certain produce, and what to look for if you buy your pressure canner secondhand. A great mix of simple and more difficult recipes, sweets and savories, and some low sugar/low sodium recipes as well.

Really enjoyed this book. I have always wanted to try out canning, given that I enjoy making home-cooked healthy meals. This book was a great help in providing concise but extensive information on the different types of canning (water bath and pressure canning) as well as a bunch of helpful recipes. Since buying this book, I have tried out so many different types of foods and jellies that I had not previously eaten. This book was a great way to extend my cooking skills and helped me to appreciate my food even more.

This great guide provides not only instructions from start to finish on how to can all kinds of foods and the equipment needed to do so, but excellent recipes for canning almost everything you can think to eat! Additionally, the glossary at the end of the book helps to clarify any terms used in the guide that the reader does not understand. I would highly recommend this comprehensive guide both to anyone who would like to learn how to can their foods, or to 'canners' looking for new and delicious recipes to add to their canning repertoire!

I bought Canning for Beginners because I was interested in saving fresh vegetables I grew in my garden. This book explained exactly how I should can my foods, what type of canning to do depending on the food, and different recipes to try now that I'm starting to can things. I found the diagrams and pictures especially helpful in learning the canning process. Now, I am going store can foods in my basement so I can enjoy my garden all year long.

I found "Canning & Preserving for Beginners" by Rockridge Press,” just a few months after suffering a power outage that lasted a week. I had just had my groceries delivered, so when the power went out, I lost everything. It was like taking $300 and throwing it in the wind. Reading through this magnificent book has taught me that despite my limitations in the kitchen, (and I do mean limitations), I can still drum up some tasty dishes, that will last through any storm and its aftermath that I might encounter. In addition, it’s great fun to have the fundamentals of my dinners already created. All I have to do is open up a jar, and the best part of my meals simply needs to be warmed up. Don’t be afraid of canning, it is incredibly simple, and makes a lot of sense, and cents, too!

I love this book. I am a beginner at canning and this book makes it easy to follow step-by-step instructions. I have since, made some jam and everyone has loved it.

Really does take the mystery out of home canning. This book reviews the history of home canning and reasons canning has made such a comeback. With enough detail for the layperson it delves into the two methods of canning and when to use each. The charts, lists, and descriptions, along with easy-to-follow recipes, provide the beginner a great foundation to begin their home canning adventure.

Being new to the idea of preserving food, this book was a fantastic source. It held my hand through what I needed, and WHY I needed it! My mother's garden produced not only more tomatoes than one household can consume, but also later in the season!  Preserving these tomatoes is a must, and canning helps a great deal. I look forward to canning more tomatoes, and wow-ing my visitors with all my freshly homemade salsa recipes!

Canning made fun? Yes! What an awesome family activity-- to grow your own stuff and preserve it, so that you know where it comes from and you know it’s healthy. I never thought I would be into something that seemed so “hippie,” but it really feels great knowing there are no strange chemicals in my food. I even have recipes to use all of my canned goods in. I really, reeeeallly love this book!

This is great primer for those who wish to learn about, and quickly set up station for, home canning to perverse a variety of foods – fruits, vegetables, soups, meats, etc.  Readers will learn about the two different basic methods to get started, equipment and materials to have ready, and an awareness of safety and taste issues that generally affect preserved foods.   Health conscience folks will love the bevy of low salt recipes, as well a large selection of recipes for many food types.  I cannot wait to share this resource with my little nieces.  -  Sue W

I found this book to be very helpful as a beginning canner.  The majority of the directions were very easy to follow and the recipes were simple and were presented with different variations making me excited to begin another batch.  My only complaint is that some of the terms were unfamiliar but, overall, think this is a great start!

A good introduction to canning.  The explanations are clear and easy to follow, and there is advice about how to reduce the chance of spoilage. There are a lot of recipes, from basic stuff to interesting flavor combos.  I really like the low-salt and low-sugar section at the end.  It gave me some good ideas about how to reduce my kids’ sugar intake by making more stuff at home (especially jam and canned fruit.)

Excellent book for novice canners Canning & Preserving for Beginners, published by Rockridge Press shows the novice canner how to deliver up healthy and tasty foods as a grocery store shelf alternative. It explains the Water Bath and Pressure Canning methods. Purchasing canning equipment and safety tips are covered. I did not know that some of my favorites such as beef, chicken and apple pie filling can be canned. It’s off to buy canning supplies to start preserving for my family today!

This book has taken away any apprehension about taking on a canning project.  The easy step by step processes described for water canning and pressure canning combined with a list of supplies and easy to follow recipes are inviting and intriguing. Including a glossary with all the  canning terms is an added bonus. The only problem now is what to try first!

This book is very helpful. I was scared to can it looked very time consuming. After reading through the book I felt a little more confident about the canning process. The recipes are easy to follow. The steps on how to can are helpful. They even give you websites if you need more information. Everything you need in one book. One thing that I really liked was that there were low sodium and low sugar recipes. I can't wait to try the mango salsa and to make apple butter.

I truly enjoyed this book. I have always wanted to try canning my own produce but had no idea how to get started. For several hundreds of years, canning was common in households during the winter months. This book gives you nines chapters of common foods that can be canned by using a water bathing canner or a pressure canner. It gives explicit instructions on the water bath method, which is the best way for a beginner to start canning because it is somewhat cheaper and less involved. It also describes in great detail instructions to can foods with pressure canning using a stove-top or electric pressure canner. Foods that can be canned include perfect pickles, jams, jellies, preserves, salsas, relishes, low sodium and low sugar recipes, fruits, vegetables, and poultry. This is a must read for all you cooks out there who want good and cheap food.
