About the Author

My name is Shane McClellan and I have owned, and lived aboard, the Guiding Light since June 2009. The rest of 2009 I spent learning about the boat, living aboard, and getting the boat ready to cruise. In January 2010 I started cruising from Houston all the way to Nantucket. In 2011 I sailed throughout the Bahamas and Turks & Caicos. I arrived in the Virgin Islands at the begining of 2012 and started a charter business. Since then I have sailed up and down the Caribbean islands and during the hurricane season (Aug-Nov), I haul my boat out of the water and spend my time traveling the world.

Travel is my passion and I love sharing it with my guests and on my website ( through my blogs, photos, podcasts, travel videos, and travel guides where I talk and write about anything and everything sailing, cruising, and travel related. My two biggest goals right now are to sail around the world and also visit every country. I figure with these goals even if I fail I will have the time of my life.

I try and live my life and inspire others with the following mottos:
1) “You cannot change the direction of the wind, but you can adjust the trim of your sail” – meaning life will throw at you whatever it wants. It is up to you to weather the storm in order to achieve your dreams.
2) “The difference between an adventure and an ordeal is attitude” – this one comes from Bob Bitchin at Cruising Outpost and it means you can choose to accept and make the best of whatever circumstance you find yourself in or not.
3) “Experience is the thing you gain right after you needed it” – this is my way of saying do not let inexperience and fear stop you from following your dreams.

With all that said, I hope my writings entertain you and also inspires you to follow your dreams. May you have fair winds and following seas.
