NEW EDITION WITH NEW STORIES IN TIME FOR HALLOWEEN 2018
Here's a roadmap to Edge of Night. Welcome to an eclectic collection of horror and paranormal short stories.
~~~~~~~~~
It takes guts to read the stuff woven into nightmares.
It's a tough job, but you're up to it.
Welcome to my world. A world where magic holds court and the dude next door just might be a demon. Or a shifter. Or an alien.
You've done time at the edge of night. Nail-biting, stomach-churning time filled with hissing snarls, menacing growls, the whoosh of unnatural wings, and the flash of hellfire. Time that lasts forever but is over within seconds because it becomes unpredictable in places like that. You don't want to stay, but it's too fascinating--in a grisly, macabre, toe-curling kind of way--to turn your back on. You recognize it, though. The place just at the threshold of darkness where it's not quite safe anymore. Evil broke its bounds at the edge of night, or maybe it always ran free and we've been deluding ourselves all along.
Join me for an even dozen supernatural tales. Monsters, demons, gods--fallen and otherwise--ghosts, aliens. A touch of science fiction. More than a splash of romance. From magical lands to a chilling glance into the past, Edge of Night has something to tempt everyone.
Everyone who craves danger, that is.
About the Author
Ann Gimpel is a USA Today bestselling author. A lifelong aficionado of the unusual, she began writing speculative fiction a few years ago. Since then her short fiction has appeared in many webzines and anthologies. Her longer books run the gamut from urban fantasy to paranormal romance. Once upon a time, she nurtured clients. Now she nurtures dark, gritty fantasy stories that push hard against reality. When she’s not writing, she’s in the backcountry getting down and dirty with her camera. She’s published over sixty books to date, with several more planned for 2018 and beyond. A husband, grown children, grandchildren, and wolf hybrids round out her family.
Talk about the weird, the wicked and the wondrous--this collections has it all. 9 books in all, 5 stand alone short stories and four great short stories that are part of bigger collections if you choose to go on (the last two are from the same collection). Each story is well-written and will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. Enjoy, but beware of what goes bump in the night!
This collection has one heck of a synopsis so I don’t really need to tell you much myself. I did have quite the thrill reading these short bites. Not one to play favorites, I’ll say that some got me more than others but not one of these left me flat. Lots of darkness prowls these pages, and I zipped from one to the next, with nary a pause in between. The author built lots of atmosphere with these. It felt like I was sitting around a campfire and everyone was sharing their own tale. I like how well that worked. Some were just a bit eerie, but some were downright creepy. You can find many of these characters and their stories again as they also have full length stories. The author shares which books feature them and I plan to check them out. Whether it’s otherworldly beings, the elements, or perhaps the genres, there’s something for everyone.
I do enjoy an anthology. It’s a chance to read new material, visit old shorts, and/or just see what new author has become available. Well this one had a bit of a twist, in that Ann Gimpel has given further glimpses into her workings as an author on various levels of the paranormal. This collection allowed for me to get a scare, a tingle, some goosebumps, a bit of romance, and even some encounters of the otherworldly kind, both alien and supernatural. Pick-up Edge of Night an see what other fantasy, nightmares or just variety of dreams that Ann has to offer: The Call The Wolf Next Door The Oracle Three Into Two Won’t go The Benson Hut Ghost Darkroom Through a Glass Darkly A Run for Her Money Epiphany
This is a collection of snippets from stories (Garen is one snippet & Blood and Magic is another snippet) & short stories. These were good stories that could leave you wanting more. I'm a big Ann Gimpel fan, and I read this in 2 different sittings. I didn't find this collection met my expectations, but I am glad that I read it.
This book has 9 stories and I'll be covering them all. The Call Takes place in Boston 1830 Luke ran for help his family needed the help of Aethelred because they didn't know what else to do. The Wraith's had gotten his mom and the whole family would be next. Lots of action but so sad too. Magic and other world fans should love this one. The wolf next door Is a Rubicon International story Miranda is on her final mission to become a full agent if she passes she is in if she doesn't well those people were never seen again. Love the action on this one. The characters are awesome. I love all the Rubicon stories. The Oracle Cassandra was being abused and starved by Gretch a man who thought he owned her. She had the gift of prophecy and the curse of no one believing her and immortality One day a man showed up and told all that people (gretch included) that she was his wife and she was coming with him. Cameron knew he was sent by his gods to save this women but will he be able to keep her? Great story. Wonderful characters this is a must read magic fans. Three into two won't go. Corina was walking and didn't know what had happened to her when her boyfriend finds her he freaks. Her eyes were now an unnatural blue. The kind like the humans abducted by the Loki get when they have had thier genetic code twisted so the aliens can conscript them inot their ranks. She has lost 3 hours had the Loki gotten her? And what now? Highly interesting. The twist and turns in this story is wild. The Benson Hut Ghost The bus had broken down and to pass the time they were telling stories It was Billy's turn to tell a story about ghosts. Only his story had happened to him OMG Spooky! Wow did not see that one coming. Darkroom Marni was just about set to graduate from high school and wanted to go to college but she lived on a farm and money was tight. Her father had died in the war leaving only her mom and her. BUT things aren't as they seem and there is a reason why people in town get really quiet when her dad's name gets spoken. OMG SOOOO....spooky and sad. Other world fans and people who love the spooky story will love this one. Through a glass darkly Cara and John were climbing up a mountain to get away from a fire raging though kings canyon national park. Problem was there is more then just a natural fire burning and John is not a normal guy. There is alot more to this story and it's in Alphas of the wild. A run for her money Sara is a park Ranger for the US park service. She and her dog her sent to see about so odd reports going on up the mountain. Once she gets to the area and set up camp her dog is acting really odd. What she finds out is out of this world and not in a good way. Lots of action and mystery in this one. If your into syfy, or urban fantasy this one is great. The full story is also in the Alphas in the Wild set too. Epiphany Cyrano was in a research station in the antarctic. She lived there with Dozier an android. The others had all died and all she had left was her job to drill for samples but no one was coming to get them and she wouldn't dealer to tell them if she found anything. You see civilization was gone as we know it. Interesting story about taking care of the earth. Highly enjoyable read and has a mix of different stories I Voluntarily reviewed a copy
If you are looking for magic, shifters, dragons, ghosts, godesses, SciFi, or aliens there is something in this collection for you. These nine shorts will give you an introduction into some amazing books and series as well as a couple of standalone stories. There is some violence and sex so 18+. Ann Gimpel is an amazing author and has written books and series in multiple genres. Even if you haven't read anything she has written, you won't be disappointed by this collection of shorts.
