A murder next door to Mac, earlier connected murders, a small town filled with wealthy, cunning residents, a detective who is now a millionaire and also the illegitimate son of a recently deceased mystery-writing author, Robin Spencer, make up part of the "crew" in this well-written, intriguing murder mystery. And.....we can't forget Gnarly, a huge German Shepherd who steals food from anyone he can, causes havoc in the neighborhood, and even helps find clues for the murder investigations. The characters in this book are absolutely wonderful. You will fall in love the minute you meet Mac, the new millionaire, and Archie, Robin Spencer's assistant. Gnarly is a little scary and mischievous, but he grows on you. The small town of Spencer seems to be a dream town, but it is a haven for infidelity, a corrupt police force, and a creative author's twist of having mystery writers as characters. The eccentric, well-to-do neighbors enhance the storyline and bring a special focus to the plot. Each character has a background that won't quit and a background that you will love. Amusing, frightening, and unusual things do happen during the investigation that will keep your interest and keep you guessing until the last page. Just when you think you have the mystery solved, another character and more clues pop up leaving you still unsure. Lauren Carr is a master at and has a great knack for keeping you guessing. A great ending and lots of surprises make this book a treat for mystery lovers. If you haven't guessed it yet, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and give a huge, "gnarly" 5/5 for IT'S MURDER, MY SON and an equally-sized thank you to Ms. Carr for allowing me the pleasure of this read. Be on the lookout for her newest book: SHADES OF MURDER

It's Murder, My Son is an engaging murder mystery series debut by author Lauren Carr. Mac Faraday is a newly retired homicide detective whose difficult divorce and subsequent near bankruptcy leaves him at a loose end until he inherits millions from his biological mother, a famously successful mystery novelist. Mac moves into her luxury home in an exclusive gated community greeted by his mother's assistant, Archie and and an ungainly mutt named Gnarly, hoping to get to know his half brother David and acclimatise to his new found wealth. But when Gnarly brings home a decapitated head and Mac learns of the mysterious murder next door his cop instincts are aroused and he finds himself embroiled in a string of assassinations, unexplained petty thefts and corrupt small town politics. With a plethora of suspects, obscured motives and victims who have contributed to their own messy death It's Murder, My Son is a cleverly plotted murder mystery that is part cosy and part detective story. There is not just one murder to solve but several, both old and new, and I was intrigued by the twists and turns that connected the investigations concluding in a satisfyingly surprising ending. The novel is well written, suspenseful yet lightened by touches of humor. I liked Mac from the first, a slightly world weary, principled detective his interest is less in the sudden money he has inherited and more in learning about his biological mother and getting to know his half brother. He becomes involved in the murders not just because it is almost literally dropped in his lap but he sincerely believes in doing the right thing. His style is laconic yet he is shrewd and not afraid to take action. As side kicks go, Gnarly is one to enjoy - the German Shepard is a mixture of mischief and canine smarts and I really enjoyed how Carr involved him into the storyline. The other characters are well developed, not only Archie and David but also the victims and villains of the story. It's Murder, My Son is an entertaining mystery with cosy charm. Fans of mysteries who enjoy being challenged by an intelligent plot supported by engaging characters are sure to be satisfied with this novel. I look forward to reading the second in the series Old Loves Die Hard

It's Murder My Son is a great murder mystery! The author, Lauren Carr, writes a smooth and engaging story that keeps you reading. It's not an easy mystery that you can figure out in ten minutes, it's a novel that gets you thinking. Mac Faraday is a great main character. His life has turned upside down, first for the worst with his divorce and then for the better with his inheritance. But does a low-key ex-detective know what to do with all that money? It's fun going on the journey with him as he learns to adjust to his new home, new money, a new dog, and a new assistant. The other characters are also well written. Each one has his/her own quirks and there are lots of witty remarks tossed around to keep the subject of murder from getting too heavy. This is definitely the book to read for any mystery lover. Do not hesitate to snap this one up! Also, she has the second book in the Mac Faraday series out already, Old Loves Die Hard. I haven't read it yet, but will do so and have the review up in the next couple weeks, so stay tuned! *Disclaimer: I received this book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review.

Carr is an exceptional writer, keeping the reader glued to the pages as her murder mystery unfolds. I was drawn into the story from the very first page as it jumps directly into the action with Katrina's murder. What I really enjoyed about this novel, aside from the thrill and suspense it created, is that Carr created every character with a purpose. There are no space filling characters within the novel at all; each person somehow connects back to the murder in some way and plays a vital role in figuring out the truth behind the many murders that ensue throughout the novel. I really enjoyed the character of Mac Faraday. Faraday, having come into millions of dollars, is thrust into the midst of a rich life, yet he doesn't allow such extravagances to go to his head. He is an extremely likable character with a nose for detective work, refusing to give up, even when it seems the trail has run cold. Even Gnarly, Faraday's inherited German shepherd, plays an important role within the story, which surprised me as I hadn't realized his importance within the novel prior to certain events that unfold within the story. Carr's ability to tightly knit together her characters and storyline, along with love, betrayal, mystery, and intrigue, is a testament to her sheer writing capabilities. Carr not only kept my attention throughout the entire novel, but also kept me guessing the identity of the murderer known as "Pay Back." It seems that everyone is a suspect in this novel, and I must admit that, in the end, I was shocked to find out who the real murdered was. Carr's talent for creating mystery and suspense is evident within her writing and I am excited to begin the next novel in the series, Old Loves Die Hard, as I cannot wait to find out what happens to Mac Faraday next. Five stars.

For as long as I can remember, I have always loved mystery books. When I was in junior high school, I read the Nancy Drew series. I just loved reading all the while trying to find out what happened. Mystery books have a way of keeping me glued to the pages, I just can't wait to get to the end. In It's Murder, My Son, you will find mystery, murder, drama, and high society! I enjoyed the different characters and different personalities. There were definitely some wild people, but they made the story interesting. I found myself laughing at how some of the characters portrayed themselves, especially in public! I suppose people with money think they can treat people as they see fit. It's so very sad to see that some people are even capable of acting they way they do. Even though Mac Faraday comes into a huge windfall, he never loses sight of his values and character as a person. Mac will learn who his friends and allies are. His first friend is Archie, who helps show him the ropes of his new house, and that of his family connections. I could feel a connection right away with Mac because of his character. He reminds me of my husband in that he wants to do the right thing and figure things out. My husband would always stay true to himself and to his character because that's just who he is. Like Mac, he doesn't let others judge him with the things we have or don't have, or even what we wear. Money may buy material things, but does it buy family, love, and friends?

In DC Homicide Detective Mac Faraday cannot believe the judge's ruling in his divorce from his wife of twenty years; she left him for another man but got their home and everything else of value. As he left the courthouse stunned, elderly lawyer Ed Willingham accosted him, but sick of his ex wife's attorneys he flees until he stopped feeling sorry for the man struggling to follow him. Ed informs him that he is the child and heir of the late Queen of Mystery Robin Spencer. She gave him up for adoption over four decades ago as an unmarried teen who knew kids can't raise kids. Mac moves into the closed gated community in Spencer, Maryland. As he takes first step towards his new home, Gnarly the German shepherd attacks him; Archie as Robin's assistant who comes with the manor, saves him from sever injuries. Archie tells the retired Georgetown cop that three months earlier, someone killed multi-millionaire Katrina Singleton who would have been his next door neighbor. The police believe the "Pay Back" stalker murdered her, but have not found any evidence as to who this individual is and whether he actually killed her. Reading his mom's novels, plays and journals and assisted by Archie and a brother he never knew existed, Mac investigates what is turning into a cold case murder. It's Murder, My Son is an enjoyable amusing murder mystery starring a likable cast and a few avaricious nasties. The story line is lighthearted fun as Gnarly brings jocularity to the mix while every time Mac and Archie try to kiss they are interrupted. The whodunit is top rate, but the entertaining plot belongs to Mac and friends and family as he leads the inquiry into the death of the next door neighbor. Harriet Klausner

This is a great first book in this series! Mac Faraday just lost everything in a divorce and was about to file for bankruptcy when he finds out his mother who put him up for adoption so many years ago and was a famous murder mystery writer has left him millions as well as her home and hotel. Now Mac who used to be a cop moves into her home and finds himself in the middle of a real mystery. This book will keep you turning pages to see if Mac Faraday can solve this mystery with help from some people in town.

Mac Faraday's life has extremes. Completely dejected by his divorce and facing bankruptcy, he felt that everything was against him. Another lawyer delivers the news that not only has he inherited a fortune, along with it comes an estate (Spencer Manor), and an exclusive Inn for him to run. Mac soon finds out that his real mother was a prolific writer of mysteries and had acquired millions from her books. Mac definitely gets the last laugh on his ex-wife. Last but not least of his inheritance comes a not so lovable dog called Gnarly. Gnarly who is presented as a stupid dog and unable to be controlled pays a pivotal role in finding out who dunnit and proves that he is an intelligent dog. Soon after moving in Mac meets the woman who cared for his mother. Archie had done research for his mother's mysteries. Together they make a great crime detective team. The novel begins with the disappearance of butter and bacon. Strange disappearances throughout the story keeps the reader wondering who and why is this being done. The true crime evolves around the murder of the beautiful Katrina Singleton. The ¿Payback Killer¿ is loose in this upscale community. The book brings forth many relationships found in a small community. It is amazing to learn that all crimes were committed to cover up who owes who and to keep the many secrets of the community. This book is a very easy read book. The humor takes away from the grisly murders and of course in the end the good guys win. You are left to wonder about Mac and Archie's relationship and must wait until the next book to discover what happens to these two.
