But they were gone, disappeared through a demon-haunted gateway between worlds. Only one held back -- Manannan, whose every instinct told him to stay. Now he was the coward knight, and in torment.
Murder and black magic beset the land. Rumors circulated that the king was enchanted, changed, that his soul was dead . . . and that a reign of terror was about to begin.
Now Manannan realized he would have to face his darkest fears: he had no choice but to ride through that dreaded gate and seek out his vanished companions.
And the secret he would learn there would tear his soul apart . . . .

Cool characters, simple plot, a lot of build up and a simple wrap up.
Once I started this book, I couldn't stop. This story constantly challenged my perceptions of "good", "evil", "honor", "love" and a "happy ending". The characters and their motives, as well as the situations they confront, and the worlds they inhabit, are thoughtfully developed. I would enthusiastically recommmend NODR to my friends who usually avoid this genre. I can't wait to read another book by David Gemmel. I am hopeful that there is a sequel this one.
I highly recommend this Gemmel´s book, that is, according to my opinion, one of his best ones (with Quest for Lost Heroes). Very innovative and exciting approach to magic description, with unordinary ideas that catch your attention. I regret he has not developed this story yet.
