The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) family of instruments are the most widely used tests of personality and psychopathology in the United States and are commonly used in countries around the world. About the Author

John R. Graham is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Kent State University. He began his work with the MMPI during his graduate training at the University of North Carolina in the 1960s. He is the author of several books about the MMPI instruments and their applications as well as numerous empirical articles. He played a major role in the development of the MMPI-2 and MMPI-A and has taught workshops on the MMPI instruments throughout the world.

Carlo Veltri is Associate Professor of Psychology at St. Olaf College, where he regularly teaches courses in psychology of personality, psychopathology, and forensic psychology. He received his PhD working under John Graham at Kent State.

Tayla T.C. Lee, PhD, HSPP is an Associate Professor of Psychological Science at Ball State University. Dr. Lee received her PhD in clinical psychology from Kent State University and completed post-doctoral training at Indiana University – Bloomington. Dr. Lee’s research investigates cognitive and personality mechanisms influencing externalizing disorders, as well as individual differences explanations for comorbidity between internalizing and externalizing problems. She has a second program of research that focuses on psychological assessment, especially the validity of scales from the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory family of instruments (i.e., MMPI-2-RF and MMPI-A-RF). Dr. Lee is an associate editor for the Journal of Personality Assessment and a consulting editor for Psychological Assessment and the Journal of Clinical Psychology in Medical Settings. Dr. Lee teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in psychopathology, psychological assessment, and quantitative methods. She routinely conducts professional workshops in these areas as well. Dr. Lee has extensive clinical experience in psychological assessment of adolescents and adults. She is a licensed psychologist in the state of Indiana and maintains a private practice conducting forensic assessments.

Description: With the addition of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory 3 (MMPI-3), this book provides an update to the long-running resource for these measures.
Purpose: This sixth edition is meant to update the literature on previous versions of the MMPI and provide an interpretative expansion for the MMPI-3 and Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Adolescent-Restructured Form (MMPI-A-RF) beyond the brief information offered in the manuals.
Audience: This book is intended for clinical psychologists using the MMPI measures, as well as students of the discipline. The authors are well-versed in the use and interpretative strategies associated with these measures.
Features: The book starts with a revisit of all facets of the MMPI-2, from its history and development to cultural considerations, use in forensic work, and interpretive strategies. The book then moves on to discuss the MMPI-2-RF for one chapter. The next chapter addresses the MMPI-3. Although it is a single chapter, it spans 80 pages and covers everything from the development to individual scales to interpretive strategies. The book finishes with the MMPI-A and MMPI-A-RF, each in their own chapter. The coverage of all of these instruments is well done with copious additional information not found in the manual that will be helpful, especially to students and clinicians not already familiar with the newer measures. The book touts the benefits of the MMPI-3 over the other measures, particularly regarding the new, culturally relevant norms and Spanish language version. The authors further predict the obsolescence of the MMPI-2 and MMPI-2-RF with a recommendation for students and clinicians to learn the MMPI-3. This leads to the only perplexing downside to the book: spending 12 chapters and 336 pages on antediluvian measures that are already covered in depth in other editions.
Assessment: This is an excellent new resource for the MMPI-3 in particular and is helpful for the MMPI-A-RF as well. Its value is equivocal for the rest of the content and makes the steep price hard to substantiate when a more focused and affordable option is desired. The forthcoming interpretive text by Yossef Ben-Porath, the MMPI-3 author, might be a better value for those who can wait. Hopefully, the next edition of this book will shift content coverage more to the current edition.
