Overview

She lives a charmed life—until she breaks the rules. But in this alternate 1961, following the rules isn't optional.

Before the Prophet, con men and thieves and murderers drove America into the Great Depression and to the brink of destruction. In those dark days, the Prophet brought the Fellowship and its Council forth to guide America out of the darkness. And under the rules of the Fellowship, America prospered.

Miranda, the daughter of one of the Fellowship's premier preacher-politicians, enjoys a life of privilege for nearly twenty-five years. But she is one of the elect and her time of independence is coming to an end.

By Fellowship law, she must marry the man her parents choose. Live in his shadow. Be his perfect wife.

Her life will never be her own. And she can't—she won't—live that way.

She escapes. Creates a new identity. Lives a new life.
A life on the run.

But the world outside of the Fellowship is much darker and more dangerous than she knew. Then, a dead man puts her back in the hands of the tyrannical Fellowship.

Re-education treatments meant to restore complete obedience, awaken dark memories. Memories of soul-shattering secrets. Secrets that could destroy her family. Secrets that could destroy the Fellowship.

She vows to fight the tyrants, even if they are family, even if it costs her life.

About the Author

Lynette M. Burrows is a survivor. She survived moving to seventeen different schools before she graduated from high school. She claims that this makes her uniquely qualified to write a dystopian novel or two.

She enjoys coffee, the pleasure of real books, and the crack of a nine-millimeter, not all at the same time—but they all appear in her stories. Lynette writes thrilling science fiction with a dash of intrigue, a dollop of mayhem, and a liberal dose of automatic weapons. Her stories waken the hero within.

The White Box stories, her collaborations with Rob Chilson, appeared in Analog Science Fiction Science Fact Magazine. She’s also had stories published in regional and national children’s magazines.

Her series, The Fellowship Dystopia, takes place in America but it’s not the nation you know. Readers have said the first book in the series, My Soul to Keep has the social significance of The Handmaid’s Tale and the suspense and action will keep you turning pages.

She blogs about creativity, inspiration, reading, writing, and other subjects of interest. Talk to Lynette on lynettemburrows.com, Facebook.com/LynetteMBurrowsAuthor, or one of her author pages.

Lynette and her Yorkies live in Oz, otherwise known as Kansas.
