Overview

Bill Moran's collection, Oh God Get Out Get Out, goes through us like ugly medicine.

It wades through his anxietywater- the grief, trauma, mental illness, money, addiction, deceased friends, and long EMS shifts- all pooled inside the depressed deathmetal kid, his thirsty mouth held open and up to heaven, wanting to die. It walks him and his audience through the haunted house that we are, the one we hate living in. It doesn't look away from the dark.

It kindly refuses an early exit. It keeps the death off by leaning into it. Hems it in like a band shirt, animal coat, tv show, or god we can wear when our own bodies are worn out. It eats its way out of Moran and his audience, the same way he will leave this world: wet with its Ugly, wearing the Ugly like a deathmetal shirt, carrying armfuls of Ugly out with him.

You'll hate the taste, but he swears you can drink this like medicine. When you want to disappear, it is light you can douse yourself in. When you want to get the hell out, it will clean house. It really hopes you'll stay.

About the Author

Bill Moran is a third-year MFA poetry candidate at Louisiana State University and a former medic. He was the 2012 & 2013 Austin Poetry Slam Champion, has performed and taught poetry internationally, and served as president of Mic Check, a non-profit poetry organization in Brazos County, Texas. His work has appeared or is forthcoming in Button Poetry (video), Phoebe, Bird's Thumb, Next Left Press, FreezeRay Press, The Dead Animal Handbook, LUX, Alien Mouth, and Drunk in a Midnight Choir. I AM TRYING



1.

(an old metalhead cries in his mom's basement regrets his life's

dream gathers griefwater into six strings wails on



tape. a zydeco legend admits he is powerless over alcohol

weeps onto his



accordion. a soul singer's best friends get

sober to show her it can be done her best songs say it



can't. an attendant washes the dead emperor's

robe. an attendant wipes blood off the marble



floor. an actor falls on live tv like a painkiller through the

pain. an actor cleans the world with



comedy. a nurse pumps the actor's

stomach. a nurse cleans out the boy's



ear. a young medic looks hard at what Hollywood

won't— what the head looks like



after. and all of us

so nervous— to the



anxious angels,

who see the ugly guts of the world,



the River of Broken Hands,

and don't look away—



who learn its width and depth,

who wade into the ugly Ugly,



legs first, and with baffling grace,

accept it, and go to work



organizing, assembling,

even as they are disassembled—



hosanna, hosanna,

God bless the Swimmers.
