Virginia Woolf was an influential English writer, recognized as one of the foremost modernist authors of the 20th century. She was born in 1882 to Julia Prinsep Jackson and Leslie Stephen in South Kensington, London. Raised in an intellectual and artistic environment, Woolf was home-schooled in the English classics and Victorian literature, which shaped her literary career. After her father s death, Woolf became a central figure in the Bloomsbury Group, an influential circle of writers, intellectuals, and artists. In 1912, she married Leonard Woolf, and together they founded the Hogarth Press in 1917, which would become the platform for much of her work. Known for pioneering the stream of consciousness technique, Woolf s best-known works include Mrs Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, and Orlando. She also wrote influential essays, such as A Room of One's Own, which addressed women's literary and intellectual freedom.
