This has got to be my all time favorite book - I bought it as the first science fiction book I had ever read, off a paperback rack in a drugstore, and that original copy is so tattered and torn it's held together with rubber bands. The book is a collection of stories (all related - I hate random stories) about an inventor named Gallegher, who can only create things when he has imbibed a bit too much - when he's again sober, he discovers he has no recollection of what his inventions are for, but they're always entertaining. He builds a robot to be his butler, but the thing is so enamored of itself that it spends all its time looking in the mirror. He builds a time machine that brings him little furry friends from the future...the list goes on. I love to pull this book out on a rainy day and sit in the window seat - it never fails to make me laugh, and can lift me out of the deepest funk. It started a long career of science fiction love, and I'll even give it credit for directing me toward computer science as a college major (though Mr Spock had a lot to do with that too). Definitely a keeper!
