This is an intriguing, imaginative book, beginning with the meaning of its subject, for to Carr-Gomm, "druid" designates followers of the ancient ways of Britain who date from as far back as the Neolithic and perhaps farther (this is an unusual usage of a word that normally means the priests of the Celts, one of the later comers to Britain). To reveal the spiritual path of the ancient dwellers on the island of Britain, Carr-Gomm takes a journey--an actual journey between sacred sites that have been revered for millennia. It is also a metaphysical journey--into a spiritual space occupied by those attuned to the land and its seasons. Twined into the story of this journey is material--both documented and speculative--about the beliefs of the ancients. Carr-Gomm's prose moves gracefully enough through the narrative but really soars when he describes his spiritual encounters, along the druid path, with goddesses and angry elementals, even death itself.
