Under the Lights (Daylight Falls Series #2) by Dahlia Adler

Josh Chester loves being a Hollywood bad boy, coasting on his good looks, his parties, his parents' wealth, and the occasional modeling gig. But his laid-back lifestyle is about to change. To help out his best friend, Liam, he joins his hit teen TV show, Daylight Falls…opposite Vanessa Park, the one actor immune to his charms. (Not that he's trying to charm her, of course.) Meanwhile, his drama-queen mother blackmails him into a new family reality TV show, with Josh in the starring role. Now that he's in the spotlight--on everyone's terms but his own--Josh has to decide whether a life as a superstar is the one he really wants.

Vanessa Park has always been certain about her path as an actor, despite her parents' disapproval. But with all her relationships currently in upheaval, she's painfully uncertain about everything else. When she meets her new career handler, Brianna, Van is relieved to have found someone she can rely on, now that her BFF, Ally, is at college across the country. But as feelings unexpectedly evolve beyond friendship, Van's life reaches a whole new level of confusing. And she'll have to choose between the one thing she's always loved...and the person she never imagined she could.

SO GREAT to see F/F YA with a happy ending, plus great bisexual rep! Love, love, love.

I thought this was great. I won the ARC in a raffle -- lucky me! The characters pulled me in as I became more and more curious to how they'd deal with their situations. Young Adults in the throws of Hollywood, starring in a prime-time show and with the whole world watching their mistakes. (sounds familiar) I had no back story whatsoever since I haven't read book one. But this didn't deter me from grasping the characters and their conflicts. The book in written in dual POVs. Vanessa's, a Korean-American actress, and Josh's, the bad boy actor, and Vanessa's nemesis. But he's more than one dimension, even though he appears that way at the beginning. I was happy to see him grow and become more than what others saw him as. And there's Vanessa and there's Brianna. Their relationship grows realistically, organically, and oh boy, it's heated, and very tender. Girls kissing and filled with love and passion. Dahlia did an exceptional job writing this story. It's intelligent and funny! A great read for all teens and then some.

You know those books you wished you'd read when you were a teenager? This is one of them. Behind the Scenes is a novel written in multiple points of view. It's about Josh, a Hollywood bad boy who is black mailed by his mother to appear in her reality TV show, and Vanessa, an actress who is dealing with her parents' disapproval of her career choice, and the departure of her best friend to New York City. I mainly picked up this book for Vanessa's story line. At the beginning of the novel she is loyal to her co-star and boyfriend, Zander, but then she meets her new career handler Bri and begins to question herself. I loved Bri and Vanessa. Bri is unapologetic for who she is, and Vanessa is willing to explore new possibilities and learn new things about herself. One of my favorite f/f pairings in NA. I'm so grateful Dahlia shared this wonderful story with us!

I loved this book for so many reasons. I was already completely in love with Josh’s wry, witty dialogue from Behind The Scenes, but being in his head was sooooooo much better. I kept laughing out loud and getting funny looks in public. (Worth it.) And I loved getting into Vanessa’s POV. She’s such an intriguing character, and everything she has to deal with as a WOC trying to make it in Hollywood makes her all the more interesting to follow. And that's even before she finds herself falling for a girl. This book has a different take on the typical romance structure. Josh and Vanessa are the two POV characters, but the two of them are not the love interests of the story. (And you’ll be so glad about that when you meet Brianna, because SWOON.) I was curious to see how the author was going to navigate both Josh and Van’s stories, and was delighted at how they came together, and the heart-warming/bitingly sarcastic friend chemistry between Van and Josh. The romance in this one did NOT disappoint. It was captivating and fun and sexy, yet realistic. And let’s all just take a moment to thank Adler for not fading to black... (Seriously. Thanks for THAT.)

UNDER THE LIGHTS is the perfect Hollywood romance. Vanessa Park is the star of a hit teen TV show. Josh Chester is Hollywood—in all its weird, fun, semi-skeezy glory. Both of them have to navigate growing up and figuring out life with the spotlight on them and all that comes with it, while being—dare I say—normal people. You’ve probably heard about the main romance in the book already, and there’s good reason. I admit I haven’t read a lot of F/F romance, but Van and Bri’s love story had me swooning. This is seriously one of the best romances I’ve read recently in YA, with all the best elements of discovery, of falling for someone you didn’t expect to, of finally feeling like you get what everyone is making such a big deal about. But as great as Van and Bri's romance is, there's so much more to this book. Like Josh! Josh is my favorite. He’s awful, in the best possible way. He’s selfish and arrogant and hilarious, and somewhere along the way, he grows a heart. He’s such a well-written character, and I love his journey to being a real human being in this book. This book is sweet—and it’s steamy. It’s young Hollywood and family drama and two people discovering themselves. It’s characters who are larger-than-life, but so real they could be the girl sitting next to you in class (if the girl sitting next to you was a TV star…). It's an ideal beach read, but it's so much more. So excited for the world to finally read it! (Note: If you’ve read the first book in the Daylight Falls series, BEHIND THE SCENES, you’ll know the characters a little better to start with, but it’s not necessary to have read BtS to enjoy UtL.)

My review for the first book can be found on my blog. I liked Behind the Scenes, but Under the Lights was so much better! This book is rather unique in the sense that we're getting two points of view, but Josh isn't Vanessa's love interest. It might seem strange when you think about it, but it's not. It actually works well. Josh and Vanessa's stories intertwine and make total sense together. Josh and Vanessa are really awesome. It was cool seeing them in Behind the Scenes, but sooo much better when the story focuses on them. They are such interesting characters (more so than Ally, honestly). Josh was great! I love his attitude and his witty dialogue is full of so much win. And Vanessa is pretty amazing, too. I loved her F/F romance. It was incredibly swoon-worthy! Overall, definitely a great book! * This book was received from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. * You can read all of my reviews on my blog, KDH Reviews.
