Witness Protection Widow by Debra Webb is the fifth A Winchester, Tennessee Thriller. Alison James will testify in four days against the Armone crime family if she can stay alive until then. U.S. Marshall Branch Holloway has Alison stashed in a remote cabin and is supposed to be with her for the final few days. But then Branch is injured in a car accident and calls in U.S. Marshall Jaxson Stevens. Jaxson does not know it is Ali until Branch hands him the file. She is the one he let get away and is baffled why she married into a mob family. Alison is leery of letting Jaxson be her protector because she does not want him harmed. She knows that Harrison Armone Sr. will do what it takes to see her dead before she can testify. Can Jaxon keep Alison alive to testify in four days? Witness Protection Widow is a fast paced novel. There is suspense, intrigue and romantic tension. This book can be read on its own if you have not read any of the other novels in A Winchester, Tennessee Thriller series. Characters from the other books do make an appearance for those who have read the other four novels. The point-of-view switches between Jaxson and Allison. I like getting both perspectives. We get to see how each person feels about a situation and how easily a comment can be misinterpreted. I like the fast pace of the story as Alison and Jaxson try to stay alive. I like Debra Webb’s engaging writing style. She provides just the right amount of imagery (not too much nor too little). There was the right blend of suspense and romance. My one complaint is that there were a couple of unanswered questions at the end. I wish there had been an epilogue to completely wrap up Witness Protection Widow. Be prepared to lose a couple of hours while you are busy reading Witness Protection Widow. Witness Protection Widow has hired hit men, a masculine U.S. Marshall, a malicious mob boss, a worried widow, and four frantic days.

Witness Protection Widow by Debra Webb Winchester, Tennessee #5 I really enjoyed this book and when I read a bit in the book that tweaked a memory of a book I had read previously I had to look up other books by this author and found out why “staying in a funeral home” triggered a memory – I had read book two in The Undertaker’s Daughter and Rowan and Brannigan are in that series though they play a much smaller part in this book. So…this book…is romantic suspense with a second chance at romance for Ali and Jax. They were very close in their early twenties but then something happened, they parted after six months together and were thrown together in this book as he, as a US Marshall, is tasked with keeping Ali alive until she testifies in a big court case. The two had a LOT to deal with not only with trying to stay alive but also dealing with truths and misconceptions from the past. Eventually they did find their HEA but it took some time and effort. What I liked: * Ali – strong, determined, survivor that deserved a HEA. I truly admired her. * Jaxson – a good man but definitely flawed. I had trouble seeing his point of view more than once but after he had all of the facts, he wised up a great deal. He is a good match for Ali * Bob – what a great dog! * the supporting characters * the plot and the writing and the tension * that it was not over the top * pretty much all of it except… What I did not like: * the Armone men – son and father * what Ali endured * the somewhat selfish side of Jax – or was it just immaturity Did I like this book? Yes Is it a standalone story? Yes Would I read more by this author? Yes Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin Intrigue for the ARC – This is my honest review. 4-5 Stars

It has been a long while since I have read a book in this line from Harlequin. I used to devour this line of books. I am a fan of mystery/suspense novels. This line of books is the perfect one for readers like me. Thus the reason when I had the chance to read a book from this line again and by author, Debra Webb, I jumped at it. Sadly, I found myself really struggling to become engaged with this story and the characters. It was not without effort. The storyline was slow to pick up any type of fast movement. After I while, I found myself sort of skimming the book. It did pick up during the latter half of the story. While, this book may not have been a winner for me, I do want to get back into reading more books in this line form Harlequin.

This is the first Harlequin romance that I’ve ever read. It is part of their line of thrillers, called Harlequin Intrigue. Ali is in the witness protection program. She was a witness to her husband’s murder by his father. They were part of a crime family, and she had information about the crimes they had committed. Ali was assigned a marshal to look after her, but when he was injured, they had to call in another man. It turns out that the new marshal, Jax, and Ali used to be engaged. They spend a lot of time together while he is protecting her, and they rekindle their romance. This was an interesting concept for a thriller. I’ve never read a book about someone in the witness protection program, but I’ve seen it in many movies. This situation made many twists when her life was threatened. There was a lot of build up to the court case at the end, which I found kind of disappointing. The whole story was about protecting Ali for her witness testimony, but that was the shortest part of the story. I wished it was longer because it could have created more tension. There was also a lot of internal monologue of the two main characters. They spent a lot of time reflecting on their feelings, rather than doing things. This may be the format of these novels, but I wish there was more action and less reflection. This book was a good introduction to Harlequin’s intrigue series. Thank you Harlequin for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Favorite Quotes: It was hard to believe now that she hadn’t recognized her fairy-tale life was too good to be true. The trouble was, she had needed it to be true. Sometimes a need was so powerful that it overrode good sense. She’d expected to possibly end up in a funeral home before this was over. She just hadn’t expected to be alive. My Review: Despite her prolific body of work, I had not sampled Debra Webb’s storytelling skills until recently stumbling into several books in her highly engaging series of The Undertaker’s Daughter, and I was an instant fan. Lucky me, this installment had an all too brief drop-in visit with my beloved characters from the previously mentioned series, which brought a delighted smile to my face. Ignore the cheesy cover and unimaginative book title as this was a quick, intriguing, active, satisfying, and well-paced hybrid tale of romantic suspense and second chance romance for first loves with likable and admirable characters, a hauntingly realistic storyline, and a pervasive sense of tension and peril.

Take a bit of suspense, magnetic attraction, sexual chemistry, along with a powerful crime family and you have Ali and Jax’s second chance story in Witness Protection Widow by Debra Webb, book 5 in her Winchester, Tennessee Thriller series. When Allison James escapes her abusive marriage, she becomes the star witness against her deceased husband’s family. It is the job of the US Marshals to protect her; but Ali is concerned when it’s her ex-boyfriend Jaxson Stevens on the job. Keeping Ali safe should be a no-brainer for Jax, but as the danger to them grows and sexual sparks fly, Jax begins to wonder if he and Ali will escape her coldblooded in-laws alive. Ms. Webb wrote an emotional, suspenseful, and sexy story that should not be missed. She provided a tale rich with sexual chemistry, humor, and endearing characters giving Jax a chance to prove he still loves Ali and that there really is a future for them; together. I highly recommend Witness Protection Widow to other readers. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book

Can Being in Witness Protection Keep You Safe? Five years ago Allison James made the mistake of her life. She married Harrison Armone, scion of a major crime family. At first things seemed perfect, but as Harrison challenged his father for control of the operation life became constrained to the point where she was almost a prisoner. Armone Senior didn’t take his son’s defection well. He shot him and Allison was a witness. She fled and is now in witness protection waiting to testify against her father-in-law. Before she married Harrison, Allison was in love with Jaxson Stevens. She wanted to finish school, and he left her to pursue his dream of being a US Marshal. Due to an accident, he’s now the marshal assigned to keep her safe. Allison can’t stand the idea that he might be harmed. Does this mean she’s still in love with him? This story is the perfect blend of romance and suspense. The attraction between Jaxson and Allison is palpable, but danger is all around them. The action moves quickly and keeps you on the edge of your seat while wondering whether Jaxson and Allison will acknowledge their feelings for each other. This is the fifth novel in the Winchester, Tennessee series. Although some of the characters have been in other books, the author does a good job of threading the backstory through the action so that it can be read as a standalone. If you love suspense laced with romance, this is a good one. I received this book from Harlequin for this review.

I sat down and read this book in one sitting. Plenty of action and steam kept me riveted to my seat. She had gone into the marriage wearing rose tinted glasses and no clue who the man beside her truly was. He had left her to pursue his career and his pride kept him from reaching out when she needed him most. They both have made mistakes and now they have the chance to make things right. This is a fast paced read with plenty of intrigue and high energy. This is my first read by this author and I am glad I had the opportunity to try her out. I will definitly be back for more.

I have to say that I think this one was my favorite so far in this series.  Ali, (Allison James) is such a compelling character.  Her strength of character makes her one of the strongest of heroines.  After enduring years of abuse both physically and mentally, Ali is ready to put a stop to the monsters in her nightmare world.  In making this decision she comes to terms that she might not survive and is willing to do what is needed to be done.  But when she discovers that the new US Marshal that will be protecting her is Jaxson Stevens, the man she fell in love with years ago, she is not willing to put his life at risk. When Jaxson Stevens discovers that the woman he fell in love with when he was just starting his career is the woman he is now to protect he has problems reconciling that girl with the woman that had been married to a monster. But there is one thing he is certain, he will keep her alive. As the clock ticks down to the finale, Debra takes the time to "flesh out" these characters. Little by little she adds depth and strength as she tells Ali's story.  Little by little you learn just how strong this quiet woman is. And little by little Jaxson becomes a hero we can root for. Yep, I think, for now, this is my favorite.  It isn't a heart-racing pounding thrill ride but a quiet look into the face of pure evil and coming out the other side.

4 1/2 STARS! With the fifth book in her A Winchester, Tennessee Thriller series, Debra Webb brings us the story of a woman in witness protection in WITNESS PROTECTION WIDOW. The story was intense and danger chased them around every corner. Allison James lived a nightmare with her late husband and barely lived to tell the story after escaping his maniacal family. She's an interesting character with a lot of grit and fortitude and it's easy to root for her as the story unfolds. Jaxson Stevens is the ex that broke her heart all those years ago and happenstance has him stepping in to protect her four days before she's set to testify and bring down the head of her late husband's family. He's filled with regret and snags a reader's heart quickly. I recommend this story to anyone who enjoys a danger filled, action packed reunion story. It's fast paced, well developed and though the ending felt a bit abrupt, I really enjoyed it!

Anytime I get a new Debra Webb book to read, I get excited because I know that I am in for a treat of tautly written suspense as well as romance that captures my heart. WITNESS PROTECTION WIDOW presents the suspense and the romance in just the right mixture to intrigue fans of both genres. Allison has married into the powerful and ruthless Armone family, unaware that her husband is part of a major Atlanta crime syndicate. Barely escaping with her life after her husband is killed, now Ali is ready to testify against her father-in-law, if she can just stay alive to do so. U.S. Marshall Jaxson Stevens has the enviable task of protecting the new widow until she can get to court. Jax and Ali have a shared past that plays well into the whole intriguing and compelling plot. Fans of romantic suspense will not want to miss out on this one!
