In 1824 Meyrick published his great work, the three volume A critical Inquiry into Antient Armour. This three book set was illustrated in colour with Samuel’s paintings and solidified his reputation as an authority in the study of arms and armour. With the publication of this set Samuel hoped to rectify historical inaccuracies that had found their way into the many displays of armour in such as the Tower of London and other collections.
