A charter of 972 documents that the abbey of St Aubin in Angers in north-western France was founded by King Childebert I in the sixth century. At the behest of the townspeople, but against his will, Abbot Aubin became bishop of the diocese in 529. He was canonised after his death in 560, and the abbey has been known by his name ever since.
