Ireland was hit by such a huge hurricane in 1839, the only one to occur in the country in 300 years, and County Donegal on the Northwest coast of the island bore the brunt of it as it roared ashore from the North Atlantic. The event is preserved in Irish folklore as the "Night of the Big Wind."
