In the 1960s the citizens of Nottingham saw the greatest change in the city in the 20th century. In the previous decade, the city planners envisaged a dual carriageway which would encircle the center of Nottingham and they began by building a new highway from Castle Boulevard to Friar Lane. Many slum properties were demolished in the area around Walnut Tree Lane near the castle, but a number of historic buildings were also swept away in the construction of the new road—notably Collin’s Alms...
