The King In Yellow: With Accompanying Facts, 10 Illustrations, and a Free Audio Link
"Strange is the night where black stars rise,
And strange moons circle through skies
but stranger still is
Lost Carcosa..."

The King in Yellow is a collection of Art Nouveau short stories, which includes several famous "weird" short stories, all of which are connected by the theme of a fictitious drama involving a mysterious book called "The King In Yellow", which is said to have the ability to morally corrupt or spiritually destroy those who read it. The second premise of the book is that "The King in Yellow" actually exists somewhere beyond the stars and an imperial dynasty has established itself on our planet; originating from the alien city "Carcosa," found amongst the stars in the Taurus constellation; the original domain of "The King in Yellow," whose unseen terrible influence on Human life is more pervasive than anyone can imagine.

Genre: Supernatural, Short story, Horror, Speculative fiction

The King in Yellow was described as one of the most important works of American supernatural fiction by editor and bibliographer, E. F. Bleiler. It was also strongly admired by H.P. Lovecraft and his circle.

About the Author

Robert William Chambers was born in Brooklyn, New York; his Father was called William P. Chambers who was a famous lawyer, and Mother, Caroline Chambers who was a direct descendant of Roger Williams, the founder of Providence, Rhode Island. Robert's brother was called Walter Boughton Chambers and was a world renowned architect.
Chambers was first educated at the Polytechnic Institute, Brooklyn, and then around the age of twenty, entered the Art Students' League. Between 1886 to 1893, Robert studied at the cole des Beaux-Arts, and at Acadmie Julian, his work was displayed at the Salon, in Paris, as early as 1889. When he returned to New York, he sold his illustrations to Life, Vogue, and Truth magazines. Then, unexpectedly, he dedicated his time to writing and produced his first novel, In the Quarter in 1887. In 1895, The King in Yellow was published and is possibly one of his most well known works. Chambers returned to the weird genre in his later short story collections, The Maker of Moons, The Mystery of Choice and The Tree of Heaven, but none earned him the accolades as that of The King in Yellow.
