About the Author

Will Hahn has been in love with heroic tales since age four, when his father read him the Lays of Ancient Rome and the Tales of King Arthur. He taught Ancient-Medieval History for years, but the line between this world and others has always been thin; the far reaches of fantasy, like the distant past, still bring him face to face with people like us, who have choices to make.

Will didn’t always make the right choices when he was young. Any stick or vaguely-sticklike object became a sword in his hands, to the great dismay of his five sisters. Everyone survived, in part by virtue of a rule forbidding him from handling umbrellas, ski poles, curtain rods and more.

Will has written about the Lands of Hope since his college days (which by now are also part of ancient history). His first tales include “Three Minutes to Midnight” a slightly-dark sword and sorcery novelette, and “The Ring and the Flag”, the first story in the ongoing Shards of Light series. You can find other stories Will has written about the Lands of Hope at the links below, including a Compendium of information about the Lands on his Facebook page.

If you enjoy military fantasy with a likable main character, then you need to read this book. Justin, our hero, who is also an elf, cannot understand why he has washed out of the military training school when he has tried so hard in this, his last chance. What a shock to find that the grading levels have been tampered with for the purpose of making it look like he failed training. He has another shock when he finds that he has a secret mission which is so important the nation depends on his successful completion of it. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

The Ring and the Flag is great Epic Fantasy in a novella-sized package. If you've never read this author, this is the perfect book to sample him with. There's a lovable hero, a serious challenge, an unexpected plot twist, an exciting battle which really shows off the hero's leadership skills and tactical understanding, and to top it all off there's an awesome fantasy beast. As an extra special bonus, it's easy to see that Hahn's fantasy world is teaming with other stories just waiting their opportunity to reach the reader. I'm off to start the second book in the series.
