Uncommon Freedom

Uncommon Freedom is based on three communities of African descent who lived freely before the Civil War in Virginia, La Florida, and Louisiana. Some families within those communities had been free for generations. The laws did not recognize them as citizens, nor as people, but they were able to own land, establish churches, build schools, and work in skilled professions.
