A beautiful short story about the slave called Yona and a huge Calliston, from the World of Dirt.

Yona was cold and so were all the others. Shut in a freezing room in a hall buried in a gorge in the North Hoar Ridge, she knew she had two possible fates: She would die here or be forced to work in the mines. That much they knew.

Overview

A beautiful short story about the slave called Yona and a huge Calliston, from the World of Dirt.

Yona was cold and so were all the others. Shut in a freezing room in a hall buried in a gorge in the North Hoar Ridge, she knew she had two possible fates: She would die here or be forced to work in the mines. That much they knew.

But then, as those around her were beginning to succumb to the cold, a young man smashed down the door and told them they were free.

So begins the incredible tale of Yona and the Beast as the slaves escape across the huge continent of Bind on an incredible Calliston, a giant beast.

This short story relates what happens to a few characters that we met briefly in Dirt, book one of the Dirt Fantasy Epic. But you do not need to read the main books to enjoy this small offering. It is completely standalone and can be read on its own.

Meet the Author

CC Hogan is a writer and old muso that loves nothing more than cuddling up with an idea, a glass of wine, a pot of hot coffee and chucking words around happily. Alright, he also just likes cuddling, but that is less interesting. He is a Londoner born and bred but dreams of a tiny cottage by the sea. At the moment he is buried in a world called Dirt, a huge fantasy that spans a thousand years and is a tale of love, war, family and dragons. Unsurprisingly, in the book can be found a cottage by the sea... CC also likes to write poetry and is trying to learn how to draw. He is always happy to answer questions, though the quality of answers may depend on time of day, wine quantity, full stomach, lack of money and so forth...

First off, C.C. Hogan is NOT an author to follow the prescribed outline for fantasy and as the author of the epic fantasy series, Dirt, this short story once again brings his completely refreshing voice to life. Read it before or after reading the first three books of Dirt. Either way, you will find more to love or a fascinating world to discover. In the world of Dirt, there are amazing races, from dragons to humans to some of the most unusual, yet intelligent creatures around. The Calliston are truly unique looking, and they are said to be related to dragons, but this one may have been tortured into blind compliance. It is the meeting of one young girl, a calliston and the soul-deep friendship that blossomed between them. Yona was a slave, her life is a nightmare of cold and dark rooms, hard work and death all around her. Is she meant for something more? When Yona is freed by a group of rescuers and dragons, she will begin an amazing journey that was destined for her. This is C.C. Hogan’s brief tale rounding out more of the life on Dirt, the cruelties, the joys and the love that can form even in the worst of times. You will feel the story, the atmosphere and what the characters are like, even as Mr. Hogan makes you smile, cry and crave more from this enchanting author. YONA AND THE BEAST is a beautiful tale that could have gone on for many more pages without losing its charm. I received this copy from C.C. Hogan in exchange for my honest and voluntary review.

If you have never read a fantasy book by C. C. Hogan, Yona and the Beast will whet your curiosity about the world of Dirt and expose you to this author's storytelling skills. Though this is a stand-alone novella, there are only a few references to the first book in the Dirt series and the author provides sufficient backfill so you won't feel left out. The only problem with this short story is that it does not highlight the author's ability to create an epic tale...for that, you will have to read one of the books. But, beware. C.C. Hogan's stories are addictive.
