Chapter One How John and Alice Met A Love Story

The time for Halloween was almost here. Now remember this is the year 1948, and the month of October.

My Aunt Katherine had a big house, so I asked her if I could give a Halloween party.

I was a happy young girl when she said yes.

I invited Betty Jacobs, Kay Prater, Joyce Prater. And said they could each one bring someone with them. Oh, my, I thought I would have around seven or eight. For a small party. But around thirty or more showed up.

We had square Dancing and lots of treats for every one. My Aunt was great about the number of teens that showed up. She said it gave them a place to go and kept them off the streets.

So many didn't know each others name so I took a piece of paper, would write their name on it, and place it on there shirt or dress.

As I came to J.T. John is his name now. I walked up to him and couldn't help but notice his big beautiful blue eyes. His blond hair with the wave that fell just right on his forehead.

When I came to him he said, why are you picking on me. I was a little shocked at what he had said. And I said don't you want to know every one here?

I was at a loss for words, and quickly moved to the next person. I had just turned 15 years old the month before.

I know, I know You are thinking she was to young to date.

Well It was not a date. But it was the best thing that ever happened to me.

That started my dating with J.T. only.

We played spin the bottle. Now some of you may remember the game that the teens would play, at a Party. It came J.T.s time to spin the bottle It would spin around and around, when it stopped between Kay and Me.

Boy did she jump up in a hurry and was ready to go for a walk. When J.T. said, not you, her. And he pointed to me.

I thought my heart would pound through my chest. I was so young, and I had on my red skirt, pretty white blouse, and my saddle oxfords. The style at that time.

J.T. and I went out for a walk, the night air was very cool and I did not have on a jacket. As we walked down this old dirt road in the front of the house, I was at a loss for words. I was a little cold and new to walking with a handsome young man like him. Or any young man. So he slipped his arm around me, and I told him I don't know you that well. Then he came back with the answer, well that's the way to get to know me. Again my heart was beating out of my blouse.

But it was so cool that I could have used his arms around me. Later when the party was closing down

We all got together and went to a midnight spook show. We had a Date Sitter of course.

Then while in the theater he tried to put his arm around me, and give me a kiss. I said again no I don't know you that well.

You see I had read a book that said never kiss on the first date. But that made him want date me again. I think John and I are what some call Soul Mates.

I never cared to date any one else. He was my Honey and still is after 56 years. Not counting the year and a half we went together before we were married.

Kay married Bobby, Joyce married Kenneth a handsome young man. And later Betty married Cecil Harris.. Yes wonderful memories. John and I were married, and fifteen months later we had our beautiful son J.J. He is now known as Jay. Some call him Papaw Carver. He got the name from carving the most beautiful things from old tree stumps.

Any kind of wood. He is a great, grand father. When I was around five months pregnant with Jay. John was drafted for the Korean war. I had to go back and live with my Grand mother. She was a Angel to me.

It was not easy. The Army pay was only seventy five dollars a month.

I had rent, and food to buy for Jay. Cloths for a growing boy. I could not have made it with out my grand mother. I have to say again she was a Angel in my life. The last few months before John was to return home I worked and saved money to rent a little house with a fenced yard for Jay. I was also able to buy sheets towels dishes. Any thing to start over again. After John and I being apart two years.

The day my Honey came home was a day to remember I had always put Johns picture on the chair so Jay could see it each day. He would kiss the picture then bend and look around the back of the picture.

The day John came home was a day to remember. Their were two men in uniform coming up in the yard. Jay was just a toddler and not able to go down the steps. But, when I said your Daddy is out side, he ran as fast as his little fat legs could take him and he had to scoot down the steps backwards. When he started to the two men in uniform, he went right to his Daddy. Yes these are wonderful memories.

John and I are Great grand parents and our son is a Papaw. My how time go's by.

Chapter Two That's Love

I want to tell you this story about my Honey and I.

After we were married we moved into this little rent house. It wasn't much, but we were together. I was so happy and wanted to be a great wife for my Honey.

So, I washed clothes the only way that I could. I would put the clothes in the tub with warm water and Tide soap. Then I would get in with my feet and work the clothes with my feet and hands. Next, came the wrenching, with clear water until all the soap was gone. But the hardest thing to do was ring out the sheets, and his khaki pants.

This all took place back in 1951. I was a young girl of 16 years old and I wanted to be the best wife for him. Believe me when I tell you I do not wash that way any more. Ha

Then came the ironing. Oh My'. I made up the starch good and thick, and would starch his shorts, shirts and even the pillowcases'. I would hang them out to dry, then sprinkle with water, and made ready for the ironing.

I Ironed his shorts and put a nice seam down the front so they would look nice. The same for his shirts, they had to have a nice seam down the front. Then the pillowcases, they had to be ironed. One day, I should say about two weeks later he came to me and said; Honey please don't put any more starch in my shorts, It's giving me a rash. But it was all done in love.

Cooking was something I didn't know much about then. Again I wanted to be the best for him.

So, I tried and tried but the pork chops were over cooked or under cooked. But my honey didn't complain. Then I guess one day he couldn't take it any more.

He came to me put his arms around me, and said; Honey I want you to take this money, go to the store and buy flower, meat, sugar, coffee, what ever you need to learn to cook with. I looked at him and said but what if I burn it are it is not right. He looked at me with his big beautiful blue eyes, and said; then through it in the trash can and start over. I told him that was money and I felt awful. He put his big arms around me and said; Honey don't worry about that, we have to eat.

We have been married 56 years today as I type this little story. And believe me, I have learned how to cook every thing. And as I look back I see all the love, and I know it is still there.

Chapter Three A Child's Heart

What will flow from my thoughts today? AHHH, Yes memories of when I was around six years old. While living with my Aunt Katherine in Houston Texas.

I loved to go out into the chicken yard, and just watch the chickens.

Then one day this big fat hen jumped on top of the feed can, and she knew just what to do to work the top off the can.

Then she would have lots of fun scratching and fluffing the feed. Of course the other hens would want to join in on the fun and the extra feed. My Aunt Katherine told me to quit leaving the top off of the chickens feed can.

I told her I didn't do it, the chicken did it.

Then she gave me a spanking. I told her, Well" God new I didn't do it. My Aunt knew in her heart something was wrong. So she went out to the chicken yard, and stood behind a tree. And sure enough she saw this big fat hen jump on the top of the feed can just right to make it come off. And the feed fun was on.

You know I think that when Aunt Katherine hid behind that tree, God had the Hen jump on the can just right so she could see this little girl was telling her the truth. God knows every thing. Another time the little dog they had, just disappeared. I was told the dog would never be back, something proudly happened to it. I remember sitting on the back porch asking Jesus to please bring back the dog. Then I told my Uncle Dick he would be back because I prayed for him, and asked God to bring him back. And he did come home about two days later, after this little girls prayer.

God Knows A Chiles Heart.

I knew my Jesus when I was just a little girl. You see God is always with you, as he was with me. Their were so many times he protected me as a baby.

The time I was just a toddler, Mom and Aunt Katherine were washing clothes in the back yard. The old fashion way. The rub board scrub. They had fixed some hot boiling thick starch, and put it at the end of this long bench. I was just a baby and wanted to see what was in the big pot. "Well" the starch tipped over onto my feet, and they were burned with this hot sticky thick starch. Mom grabbed me up ant took me in and put my little feet under water, trying to get the hot starch off of me. When she started taking my shoes off my skin came off with them and she could see my bone. They rushed me to a doctor. He said I would have to have skin grafting. Mother took me to the Assembly of God church that was their. They were all praying for me. The Doctor was there also. The other churches all around were praying for this little girl. God preformed his miracle, the Doctor and every one their saw the skin start to move and cover my bone. "YES" God still works miracles. Isn't God wonderful? And he is still taking care of his babies today.

Sometimes some have a shorter life span here, but God can see into the future. And just maybe he was saving that child a lot of pain. Just maybe I am here to write this in my book, to help some one else. God Loves You

Chapter Four A Monkey

This took place in 1937 When Mom left Dad and went to California. We went to live with Grandmother Spangler.

We all left Texas and went to California. That is my Uncles, Glenn, and Niland. I do not remember what other Uncles came with us at that time.

I had four more that moved there also. I was just three years old at that time.

I remember Grandmother had them pull over to a park way that had rock type stoves with a wire rack on top. You had to put in some wood or what ever to cook a meal on it. That is all I can remember about what it looked like. But they were put out for people that were traveling to use.

Grand mother gave me a banana to eat and I wanted to go and see the monkeys that were their for the people to see.

"WELL" I got to see the monkeys. And being just a three year old I wanted to share my banana with that cute little thing. The monkey grabbed my arm banana and all and was trying to pull me into the cage.

I was crying, when all of a sudden this man came to my side, the monkey let go and I started back to Mom and Grandma. They quickly went to thank the man. But he was no place to be found. Was this one of Gods Angels?

As soon as this man stood beside me, the monkey dropped my arm. Then the man was gone as quickly as he had came to my side.

He was no were to be found. Gods Angel, Yes.

Chapter Five A Little Girl's Memories

There was so many times Jesus was taking care of me through out my years as a child. I now know he was always there for me. Just take a piece of paper and let your memories flow of your child hood memories. I think you will find the hand of God working in you life. Some things could have been much worse if God was not there. I went into Faith Home in Houston Texas at the age of nine. I had no home to go to. And my mother was too sick to care for me. I know it was the best thing for me, but I was a very lonely little girl even if I did have twenty four other girls living in the same dormitory. Now, Mrs. Murphy was a very good house Mother. I learned to Iron my clothes, make my bed, keep my room clean. Then one day, I found out that two of the older girls were going to run away. And I talked them into taking me with them. I was only ten at that time. And after all I had thirty cents to give them. And I was the youngest. Now we were in Houston Texas, three young girls out alone in the streets of a large town. Some how we ended up at one of the girls fathers house. On the North side of town in a less populated area. I could see why she was not living with her father. The house was two rooms. Now two rooms is fine if it is clean. And believe me this place was crawling with roaches, and filth. The woman gave us a little to eat in dirty dishes. I believe the woman that was living with her father, they were drinking buddies. After the stories that she told us about the witches that were around there, and how we had to be quiet because the devil and his bad Angels came around each night and would look in the windows. The Devil knew how to get in, and he liked little girls. Well" when we went to bed on the kitchen floor, I was one frighten little girl and could not sleep. The next morning her father gave her a few dollars. We went to down town Houston, and to a theater. And that is were we were all day long, until closing time. The last show was a stage show that little girls did not need to see. On the way back to her fathers house. I made up my mind not to go back there. I was a little girl that was always behind the two older girls. What they did not know was that my Mother lived out that way some place. And I decided to go to her. This was the last bus for the night. It was four miles to the end. Then I would have to walk a mile and a half. So They sat in the front, I took a seat in the back. And something told me to play like I was asleep. I was leaning my head against the window when, I noticed a man sitting across from me. He had blond hair, and had on a white shirt and slacks. He got off at the end of the line when I did. He started walking beside me. At first I was afraid, then he started talking to me. The night was cold and damp. There were no street lights, and it was hard to see. He told me I should not be out this late at night, that it was not safe. Awful things could happen to a little girl out late in the night. And he gave me a good talking too. He walked me all the way to my Mothers house. Then he waited for me to go to the front door. My mom saw me and grabbed me, she was crying. And said she had been praying God would send his Angels to watch over me. I quickly told her about the man that walked me home to her house. She ran out side to thank him. But he was no place to be found. Now Mother knew all the neighbors. And he was not one. How did he disappear so quick?

Mother and I both talked about it, and thought God had sent one of his Angels to watch over this little Girl.

I know I will never forget him. I went back to the Faith Home. And in about two more years my Grand mother came back from California. I went to live with her. A Home at last.

Chapter Six A Little Touch of Heaven

I have so many wonderful memories of my little Taffi and my little Biscuit. They both had so much love for me as well as John.

We had my beautiful baby Taffi for 13 years before she went home to be with Jesus. And we had our beautiful Biscuit for 12 years. My heart was broken when we lost each one.

I thought I could never love another one.

They were both Pickiness, and so loving.

Well after the loss of our little Biscuit, my second beloved baby I said again I would never get another One because it hurt so much to lose them.

But God had another plan for us, yes another little baby. She was six years old when our Veterinarian Called us and said; I have a little Papillion that needs a home. She had been very mistreated. She was missing a toe had a cut in one ear, had a tit pulled off, had to have last puppies by surgery. I was told she would not live long if she had to go back to that place. John and I went to see her, I knew she needed us, and we needed her. She is so full of love I can't understand how people can be so cruel.

I know we will have three babies in heaven when we get there. I have done lots of reading in my Bible.

And Billy Graham made a statement one time that Your pets would be in heaven. All you have to do is ask. NOW, On with my story.

In my heart, I could see into a little bit of Heaven. And this is what I saw.

As I walked into this beautiful place I noticed every thing was so beautiful. The flowers, the trees, The people. I noticed the people had a glow so pure And clean. As I took a closer look I saw a friend of mine Lottie Smith. She had a short life here, but a wonderful life there. She had a Glow as if she was lit by the sun. Come to think about it every one had this glow. I saw a number of family and friends there.
